« on: November 26, 2011, 01:38:34 PM »
I have an older 870 wingmaster 3 inch magnum.  I want to ake a slug gun out of it.  What barrel do yall recomened?  My longest shots would be 100 yards or so.  Anyone have a barrel I might be able to buy?   Thanks in advance.   ><> del

Depending on what slugs you want ot shoot would matter what barrel you use.
The Sabot slugs  are made for rifled barrels.
A foster slug works in a smooth bore and the rifled wings on the slug are there to impard a little rifeling to the slug but are more to have a crush zone to go though fixed chokes.
I have a 20 smooth bore with a bead on my 870 that I have no problem hitting things at 100 yards with it.
On my whish list is a smooth bore with rifled sights so I can shoot both slugs and buck..
They also make a Rem choke version that you can use a riffled choke in and get the best of all worlds.

I would put a 20" Hastings on it, short, light, and accurate.

If it's going to be a dedicated slug gun you might consider shipping it to Dave Klotz in Weedsport, NY at Da-Mar Gunsmiths.  Dave has some patents related to making slug guns shoot.  Brownells and others carry his stuff.

He specializes in Remingtons.  He can pin the barrel in place so there is no chance of movement.  He also makes a rail scope base that sits on the receiver like a saddle so the screws go through the curved side of the receiver and not the center of the top which is much thinner and prone to recoil related failures.

Every one of the guys I know who have had him dance on their slug guns (that can shoot...) are getting groups of 2" or a less at 100 yards.

I don't know what the work costs but he has always been very reasonable in his pricing for my work and folks send him guns from all over the US and parts of Canada.  His number is (315) 834-9156
