diy rifle slings
« on: December 31, 2009, 08:47:57 AM »
i save all the straps and hardware left over from computer bags, sports bags, knapsacks, etc. then i just add some sling swivels and match up parts to get cheap slings. the best parts to save are the suede covered pads from the shoulder straps. they stick to your jacket very well to keep the sling up on yur shoulder
every day is a gift. use it well

colour is a symbol of where you are from and not of who you are

Here is a tip for those with padded slings.  Take your slings and hardware to a shoe shop and have the top loops sewn permanently.  Make the top strap as short to the hardware as possible to assure that the padded portion of the sling actually rests up your shoulder.

I go to a horse tack supply store and buy a leather strap.   A couple of swivels and some Chicago screws and I have a really nice professional looking leather sling.

I use light weight nylon strap about an inch wide, and some buckles from the hardware store to make up the lightest sling I can. You don't have to worry about "arresting it". It's too light to throw you aim much for a quick off hand shot. My slings spend most of their time in my fanny pack anyhow, and usually only come out when the work begins.

I read somewhere,( I think on Junior 's site) about making slings out of para/550 cord. You weave it together about an inch wide and to lenght. If it comes down to needing it you have several feet of useful cordage with you. 550 cord has many uses. 8)

I used a material called Biothane to make a homemade copy of a "Ching Sling", threw it together with some Chicago rivets and viola !  Works well, and very quick to "sling up" for a shooting aid.

As an added bonus, since I used flush mount quick disconnect sling swivels, I can pop it off in seconds and the forestock rides nice and smooth in the bag for sighting at the range etc.

Is there a problem with it?  It works fine for me.

I think you just have to be a registered Hoodlum.  Here's some more links.

When I was young... braided slings were considered primo sign of professional hunter.  I get braided leather belts from a good will store, fit them with Chicago brass screw fasteners and voila, a $5, 1 1/8" adjustable braided sling.

+1 rdlange.....except I only had to to the closest for old braided leather belts.

I would like to figure out how to make a Montana sling without autopsying mine.

I am unable to post pics right now but just finished making a sling for a savage 24S/D 22lr/20ga with 550 para cord. I used a double king cobra knot that I learned off one of the many websites about paracord projects and it came out great. I used brown to match the rifles stock and in an emergency I have almost 90+ feet of paracord in one continues length.
