Gentlemen i know that this question has been asked a thousend times probably but i like a straightforward answer :

I am looking for a rifle to hunt whitetail deer and shots within 100 yards. I do not handload yet so factory ammo only for now..  The rifle is gonna be a 336 marlin and now i wonder if i should go for the 30-30 or get the .35 remington.. ?

second question.. will a broadside shot with a 35 rem 200gr within 100 yards give exit wounds ?

Either cartridge will work wonderfully for you use.  My own preference is the .35 Remington, and IME the 200 CoreLokt will exit on broadside shots.   The factory ammo is outstanding and has proven itself for nearly 100 years.  I use mine in a 14" T/C Contender, loading the 200 CoreLokts to 2000 fps, or a bit faster than most factory ammo is from a rifle.  If you handload then the 180 Speer is great too, and I've used the 150 CoreLokt handloaded as well, but in a factory load stick with the 200s...you won't be disappointed.

My dads 35 Rem.  has been used to kill his, my brothers, and my first deer.  Every deer I have seen shot with it the exit hole has been fist size.  I agree with the 200 grain core loks.

My heart goes out to the 35 rem but everybody keeps telling me that the 30-30 is the "smarter" choice.. it is cheaper to shoot and at least the paper ballistics for factory ammo seem to favour the 30-30 over the 35 rem...

both will probably suit my needs just fine but for some reason the 35 rem seems to attract me more..

The 35 Rem is an excellent choice for shots less than 150 yards...

I shoot a Marlin 336 35 Rem with a Williams Peep Sight...I have shot the 35 Rem for 30 years and will continue too...I use it for hogs deer and on some black bear hunts...with BuffaloBore 220 grain JFN Heavy 35 Rem's it will handle elk and moose out to 150 yards...the Remington 200 grain Core-Lokt's work well on deer and hog...

As for ballistics 35 Rem and 30-30 are pretty close in factory loads...the major difference is the 35 Rem hits harder is heavier makes a lot bigger wound and exit causes more internal shock...in the BuffaloBore ammo the 35 Rem has a lot more energy...

35 Rem is a very underrated gun...quick to the shoulder medium recoil effective killing power...

First rifle I purchased as a young man was a Marlin 336 in 35 REM.  After many years of hunting and shooting white tailed deer.  I can say without question the 35 is a very good choice.  For me the 30-30 wouldn't be of any interest.

Wilco----I have  had Marlin 336's in .30-30 and 35rem since the mid 60's -- they are both semi   retired now  only because I mostly hunt with a handgun---  the 35rem will do anything the .30-30 will do except shoot 125gr bullets  well ---and the 35rem will shoot more accurately with 200gr at better velocities---you will love the 35 rem!    pg

palgeno thank you very much.. if you dont mind i have one more question..  since you have probably hunted with both the 30-30 and the 35 rem, have you ever noticed any difference in "killing power"  ?  

suppose he hunter does it job, will the bigger and heavier bullet of the 35 drop a deer faster or will it run 100 yards too as i have seen happening with 30-30's ?

Wilko----I would have definitive answer for you if I could have killed the same deer with both guns!!!   :lol:   Seriously, proper bullet placement and bullet construction  mean a lot in this comparison because velocities are similar in the medium weight loads . There is a difference at the extremes. Since the .35 Rem is available with high energy cartridges as stated earlier in this thread, the advantage goes to the .35 Rem. That said, I have not lost a wounded animal with either gun----patience and persistence is more important than the differences in these two calibers. pg :-)

Wilko..

I think Palgeno has certainly given you sound reasoning for your decision...and from what I've read on this board the 35 Rem is probably going too be your best choice...both are excellent in what they do...but I give the edge to the 35 Rem for stopping power...it's a great short range round...nothing fancy just a blue collar round...hard working and if you do your job behind the sights it will do more than it's...
