teach me how this works
« on: May 22, 2011, 03:12:43 AM »
hello everybody,
after five years in texas the army has finaly decided to move me after i return from this deploymentso sometime around late nov/dec ill be moving to ft carson. ive been to colorado springs once as a kid and loved it, i cant wait to get back there.

about the hunting, how does your tag system work? i saw that most units you have to draw for but then i also saw that you can buy OTC tags. are you able to use the OTC tag in any until or just the one you buy it in? i also heard a guy talking about how you can go to the fish and game station and just buy as many cow elk and doe deer tags as you want, but im not so sure he knew what he was talking about. so please if you would lead me in the right direction. i bow, muzzle loader and rilfe hunt and ill hunt darn near anything but i would really love to go after some big colorado deer (texas deer look like dogs) and ive always dreamed of hunting a elk.

any info would help

thanks

mitch

Hi Mitch,

It tends to be a little complicated, best info is from the Big Game brochure, their website, or call and talk to a customer rep. There is a limit to the number of deer licenses for each unit. They are available thru the draw that you apply for by early April or as leftover licenses that go on sale at license agents in early august. You can get one license thru the draw and another as a leftover license, or two leftover licenses (generally does). Sometimes you can also get additional licenses for special hunts if they want to cull the herds in the winter.

For elk it is a similar process, you can get one license thru the draw (bull or cow) and another as a leftover license. For both elk and deer the licenses are classified as "A" or "B". You can get an "A" and a "B", or 2 "B"s, but not two A's. You can also get a 2nd or 3rd season over the counter bull license that is good for most units. This is a type "A" license, same as bull licenses thru the draw. Cow or doe tags thru the draw can be either type "A" or "B". This year I applied for a type "B" cow tag thru the draw for the third season and I hope to pick up another cow tag for the second season in a different unit. Hope that ups my odds for success, the freezer is empty and my wife's complaining!

Good hunting!
