8 gauge single shot
« on: June 09, 2011, 01:49:53 AM »
While at an auction this week I bought a couple of 8 gauge shotguns. One is a breach loading single barrel. The only markings I see is the word American on the top of the barrel. It has 2 triggers, one opens the action. The gun weighs 12 lbs. Has anyone ever seen one like it? Shotgunner

Are they shoulder guns or "punt" guns? When I was a kid, the local hardware store had an antique 4 gauge in it's front window. A left over from the meat gathering days of wild game provisions then sold to the public. It had a metal peg that dropped into a hole in the boat to absorb recoil when hunting sea ducks. If I remember correctly they were front loaders, but must have been a heavy recoil and blast!

Pictures would be nice.
8 gauge hulls are available from Ballistic Products Inc.
Are the guns shootable? Most likely illegal for hunting in any case.

Check your local laws, but I believe you can still use 8 ga. for pigeon removal from Barns.... that's about it though. You can't use them for Migratory Birds and I'm sure State Laws (although they vary) probably top out at 10 ga. for Turkey.

My Uncle had one years ago that he shot once... and only once. Then he locked it up and never shot it again.

There were more than a few makers. Other than googling and hunting for info, your other good bet is to watch gunbroker (or similar) and see if something like yours comes up for sale.

I would want it to weigh about 30lbs before I shot it.

I think they're used to bust the slag up inside industrial boilers...

I'm not sure I'd want to shoot one either.

Watch the movie Tombstone. At the creek shoot out Kurt uses one. I believe Stevens was the original maker with a lot of hardware store brand names applied

Also used by Everett Hitch (Viggo Mortensen) in Appaloosa (came out in 2008, based on the novel by Robert Parker)... good movie :)

4ga is used for slag busting and the shells are restricted from general purchase.

Both guns are shoulder fired breach loaders. The hulls are from Kiln guns, used to break up rings in industrial kilns. They shoot 8ga slugs! The kiln guns are mounted and used only in industry. If they have 209 primers, and you could find a roll crimper, you could make reloads. They are real neat guns to handle, Shotgunner

I have seen a shotgun like you described (Don't know the Make). It was used to break up material ring in a rotary cement kiln.  It didn't stay around long at the plant because nobody wanted to take the punishment it dealt out. So the company went to a tripod mounted one with a Martini type action, it probably weighed  300#. If I remember correctly the shells shot about a 4 oz. zinc slug .
