45-70 short

 I want to hunt deer with my H&R buffalo classic but indiana has a max case length of 1.625 has anyone done this and have ideas for powder and bullets.

What in the world 1.625 inches? That limits your hunting rounds to like either handgun rounds or a 7.62x39. That cuts out all popular hunting rounds like .243 Winchester or 308 or 30-06. Just like Nobade said have them fit it with a 45 lc barrel.

If the factory still has some stock of the barrels, it'd be best to do that.  I believe the last run was in 2008, however, so it may be easier to find a .45LC Classic Carbine, which is what I have also.  I use the BC for long flats, but have found it slightly nose heavy for all day carry.  The Carbine is easy to carry all day.  ;)

Multiple options for 45-70 short.
Hot loaded 45 Colt rounds, 454 Casull or 458X1.5" (458 Win mag cut to 1.5")  Belted round.
If you look at the 300 grain bullets the 454 comes very close to the speed of 45-70 out of a rifle.  Same as the 458X1.5"
You can make your own, based on a 458 projectile but the 45-70 is a tapered round, not a strait wall so you can not just cut down the 45-70 case to 40mm.
You could use the 45-75 Winchester as a model.  It is 1.89" long but a 348Win case cut and necked to either 454 or 458.
Another option, while expensive is either a stunb in 474 Linebaugh or a a Ruger No1.  With a 350 grain bullet leaving a handgun at 1500 FPS  is more than enough for deer.
Finally a 44 Mag barrel would be the cheapest way with more than enough for deer, ammo is going to be the cheapest of the lot of things mentioned and almost every store you head into will have a box of 44 Mag from 180 grain to 240 being common and custom ordered factory loaded 300 grain hard cast.  You will be hard pressed to tell the difference between a deer hit with a 405 grain lead coyboy load out of the 45-70 and the hard cast 300 grain 44 mag out of a rifle.  It will be a finger sized hole in and a thumb sized hole out.

I think the easiest solution is to send your frame into H&R for a .44 Mag. Barrel.  (NEF no longer exists after Remington acquired Marlin, H&R, NEF)  .45 Colt barrels are discontinued and getting as scarce as hens teeth. Then rent the reamer and ream it to .445 Super Magnum.  The case length is 1.63.  Put a case trimmer on them, take a hair off and load them.  You can easily load to 2000 fps.  I load a 240 gr. XTP, but don't have to worry about case length.  It's a thumper.

Bud's still has the .45 Colt BC.  You could buy one to get the barrel, and sell the rest.

what about useing 460 smith brass? I dont off hand know the lenght of it but if its to long it would be easy to trim a bit. you might want to check for sure if this would be legal. They might go buy the chambering marked on the gun not the actuall ammo used. Kind of like mich waterfoul rule. You can only have 3 rounds in your gun and it must be plugged to make sure you cant put more in it. You cant just load 3 to be legal.

44 magnum is probably your most practial solution.  It fit's your state's laws and plenty of good hunting loads are available off the shelf.  If you load, then 44 offers a wide selection of easy to get components.

1.62" brass max length and bullet diameter of at least .357.   Barrel, chamber type or size do not matter.

The new Indiana regs for rifles starting next year will be 1.8" which would include the 460 S&W.  I'm planning on cutting down some 458 X 2 brass for next year.
