Best holster
« on: May 06, 2011, 04:40:13 PM »
My brother has a Smith and Wesson 9mm handgun model SW9VE and would like to get a holster for it.  He has his concealed carry permit and doe's not know what kind of holster he should get.  We went to the store to look at some holsters like the Blackhawk, they have the special button to push a button before you pull the handgun out, but again, he is not sure what kind of holster he should get.  Like should he get the kind of holster that hooks on the waist or the kind that is put on around ankle.

What is the best kind of holster to conceal carry or open carry; like I have said, he has never concealed carry a handgun in the public before.  The key is he wants a kind of holster that if you had to get up and run the gun would not fall out but he would have the ability to conceal carry.  Should he get two or three different kinds of holsters? Do you get one with a button to push so you can pull it out?  Any other good tips would be greatly appreciated.

MY usual rant---We don't need no steenkin scabbards.
I mellow with age.
The real fact is that for concealed carry of semi-auto's I really don't care for holsters. Just more bulk and you have to get undressed to get rid of the holster. Since i am right handed I carry about 4 o'clock.
I do have some Horshoe Holsters and they are the finest made---handsdown.
I do carry revolvers in holsters--for various reasons--but I have a couple of 3 inch belts that I use to strap on the holsters. They carry and hide very well under loose shirts. Not a quick draw outfit but very comfortable and you don't have to undress to remove the holsters.
NOW
If we get open carry that is almost a whole new ballgame---not 100% but maybe 70%.
It will allow me to carry revolvers and show off the BBQ Rigs.
It gives me great pleasure to confuse the hell out of this conversation. ;D
Try em all out at the house for a day and see what works.
Blessings

For concealability, you are probably looking for an inside the waist band holster, such as Milt Sparks summer special.  A high ride outside belt holster can work if you wear a jacket or baggy shirt.  Stay away from ankle holsters, as they are hard to draw from, and best reserved for small hide out guns carried as a back-up to a larger weapon.

Security holsters with push button releases and the like are mainly designed for law enforcement officers working in crowded conditions, to prevent gun snatches.  They work, but require a lot of practice to hone muscle memory so you can draw without hesitation under stress.
