Savage & Stevens 200 .223 1-9 twist Light or Heavy bullets?

I love my Stevens 200 in .243 so much that I am getting another Stevens 200 in .223!  :)

With the fast twist 1-9 barrel, with what bullet weights have you guys been getting the best groups? I would like to shoot a 50 - 55 grain bullet most of the time........

i have got 1" or less groups with 50g and 64g bullets in mine. and those were with about the first loads i tried. also got good 1.25" with 75g bullets only trying one load. you should have fun for sure

4 given, I have a Savage 12fv. Much like your gun. I get the best results so far with Hornandy and Sierra 52 gr. match bullets. I have tried hornady 55 gr. sp., hornady 60 gr., Nosler, plastic tip 55 gr.  The 1/9" twist seems to shoot 52 gr as well as 60. Have not tried 69 gr. yet.

My stevens will shoot whatever i put in it into a 1 - 1.5 inch group.  I feel like the gun is more accurate than that, but the shooter is not.  I have shot mostly 50-55 grain FMJ cheapos, but did try some 62 grain remington match ammo.  It shot better than the cheap stuff, but not by much; again, I feel like I am the weak link here.  I have some 45gr that I havent tried yet, maybe today or tomorrow will work out.

4given,I also have older Savage 10FP with the 1:9 wist.Some of its favorites are 55 grain Nosler BT,55 grain Hornady SXSP,and most recently 55 grain Sierra Gameking.I'm sure you'll be happy with the new rifle,just let it tell you what it likes.Some are easier to make happy than others but very few you can't find a load it likes.

got to shoot my .223 a few times this evening; this is the first time I have been able to shoot a rifle in several months.  first 2 shots were at water bottles to warm the barrel a little.  the next three shots were Fiocchi 40gr into .9";  the next three were Fiocchi 50gr into .97".  about average for me with this rifle.  I have a thumbhole stock ordered to replace the factory plastic, hopefully those groups will shrink a little bit more.

The one I had, I was shooting 1/2 MOA with 55gr V-max with RL 7

My Stevens 200 will put a Hornady 70 gr. soft point ahead of 42 gr of 4064 into 1/2" & smaller at 100 yrds. If the .223 will do that I will be pleased.

Been loading a light whistle pig load in my Remington 700 .223 varmit rifle that shoots sub 1/2" consistantly. It's 20 gr of H4198 behind a 50 gr V-Max.

Mine shoots 55's around .5" with 25grs H4895, I have been shooting 55gr VMax, 55gr Sierra SPBT, 55gr Sierra HP, and 55gr Speer.  I have not adjusted my seater die from one bullet to the next for OAL, my rifle is not picky at all.

It should shoot whatever you feed it.  Faster twist will not make the lighter bullets less accurate and 1:9 isn't particularly fast anyway.  I've shot from 36gn Varmint Grenades up to 75gn Hornady HPBT will good results.
