My 450 AtlLaw Express (45-120) decided awhile back to fire only when it was good and ready. With a gun that is prone to making one flinch, misfires do nothing to improve your trigger work.
Anyway, now have a new Wolff trigger spring and new T-Bar. I have a new F-pin & T-bar spring to install (thanks Tim!). I changed my loading technique and switch to I4350 powder, using 350 Grain Hornady RNs. I have been to the range twice this week shooting loads with 3 different primers; Win L. Pistol, Win L. Rifle & Rem LR Mag. Gun fires 100% with the LP and LR primers but only 80% with the LR Mags. I think I know the cure here but that isn't the reason for the post. What I found is:
The Large Pistol & Large Rifle primers handle the pressure of these loads w/o an issue. I am shooting these bullets in the 2,300 to 2,400 FPS range. Both of these Non-Mag primers also ignite the powder w/o any hint of delay. Accuracy is another story, Win LR primers gave me a sub 1" 3 shot group @ 100 yards, the pistol primers yielded a group about 3 times that large.
I then shot a 6 round group @ 100 yards into about a 2" group using the Rem Large Rifle Mag primers. Going to see if this is repeatable and if so I will be switching to the Win LR primers for this gun.
I knew that primer affected accuracy but was surprised by how much. Going to completely fix my FTF problem then repeat this exercise with a number of other primers as the only variable and see how it goes.
I apologize for the crappy target and bad picture. The Upper Right bullseye is the Large pistol primer, Upper Left Bullseye is the Large Rifle Primers, and the Mag Rifle Primers is the Right Hand center Bullseye. I don't know who shot those other 3 groups?!?
