460 s&w and cast
« on: May 06, 2011, 01:46:53 PM »
just curious if anyone shooting the 460 has any experience to share with shooting cast boolits.  my main reason for doing the conversion to 460 wasn't to shoot a light bullet at laser speed, but instead to get a little more room for powder to shoot big cast boolits with it.  i've had 2 range sessions since converting it and both times had scope issues, but i guarantee thats taken care of  ;).  i have a variety of cast loads to try again this weekend but was just curious as to anyone elses experience with this and cast, even small ones.  for tomorrow i have loaded bullets from 260gr up to 520gr.  we shall see.... ;D

thats along the lines of what i was after, or at least to have the option with.  like a lil brother for a 45/70, just a little rogue.  the speed is cool dont get me wrong, but reguardless what gun im shooting, i like big boolis  8)

i'll post my results tomorrow, good bad or indifferent and we'll see what happens  ;)

I've been asking this myself. Been eyeballing a 20" encore barrel in local pawn shop. It will follow me home soon i'm sure. Keep us posted. Thanks, pat

well for a quick trip to the range it showed me there is potential here.  first shots fired were 40gr lil gun and a 260 cast.  the velocity was all over, and only 2 out of 4 hit the target, then i gave up on that one.  in the picture this is the middle target.  next up was 520gr and 35gr H322.  the target is the one on the far right.  the first shot was closes to the "bull" but the next 5 showed a bit of consistancy.  velocity on this load was about 1450fps.  the extreme spread was also only 20fps for this load.  the target on the far left is a bullet weighing 360gr.  this was a lee hollow base 405 nose pour mold that i took down in the lathe to give it a big fat nose, but also lost some weight.  i'll put the picture of the bullet last.  the load for this was 33gr H4227 and velocity avg was 1870fps, which was more than i was expecting.

next week i will revisit this last load and i'll try some with less powder to see what the effect might be.  also next week i'll be trying some 430gr bullets with gas checks as i think the checks will help at these pressures.

If those groups were shot at 100yds, I wouldn't change a thing....just shoot the 360s with a gas check, zero the scope and call it a day. That bullet and velocity will kill everything you need it to on this continent and maybe a few more.

Thanks, Dinny

Have not shot it for awhile, but 460 Encore gave me very good results with Beartooth 355gr and 405gr ( I like big heavy bullets too).
Don't have the exact loads notes with me at the moment, but Vihtavuora N110, N120 and Hodgdon H4227 gave me the best accuracy.
The N120 was the highest velocity.

Dinny, groups were at 50yrds. but im still contient with that at 50, although hoping for something better?  what my ultimate goal is would be consistancy..  no leading and repeatability from one day to another.  the low ES of the larger bullets give me hope for that, maybe with some tweaking.

Please let us know how it shoots after you get those bullets gas checked. I would venture to say there won't be much of a difference at 100yds.

Thanks, Dinny
