000 buck shot in 38/357 case.
« on: May 09, 2011, 09:25:32 AM »
I remember reading some time ago a Mike Venturino article in either shooting times or guns and ammo about stuffing a couple 2 or three 000 buck shots in a 38 or 357 case for multiple projectile rounds. Have any of you folks heard of this or tired it?

Now that you bring it up I do kinda remember the article you are referring to but don't remember the particulars.  I also read of a guy shooting round ball lead projectiles out of a 45LC with good accuracy.  The problem I am having with the buckshot is where would you get load data, unless you can find the article and data is listed in it.

I'm pretty sure it'll be a "Work your way up" load...... ::)
I have some of the 000 buck and I'll probably give it a try.
Was just hoping someone on here might have tried it before.

I can't remember if I used #4 or #1 buck ( maybe both in different cal. )but one or the other was a nice fit in a speer shot cup for snake shot . I think it was 3 shot if the end next to powder was placed over the powder and 2 if used correctly. I did this 15 to 20 years ago and never found it to have enough power to be useful .

Remington loaded pretty much the load you are talking about I wanna say is was dropped  late 80's. If you could find some older flyers 85-89 I tihnk it would be in there as far as stated velocity and such. I also wanna think they only loaded it in 38 special and it was 2 000 pellets. If I were going to start working t a new load up the first powder I'd start with would be trail boss. measure the two pellets as to find how deep they would be seated  fill the case to that point , weight the charge back off a grain and go for it. *trail boss is the only powder I would ever consider doing this method with * The great thing about trail boss is it's about impossible to blow a gun up with it, notice I said about someone will probly figure out a way to do it though eventually.

One thing I'm pretty sure of is I'll probably lube them up with some Lee alox tumble lube.
The stated diameter on the box says .350 dia and two will slide well down in the case.
I'm thinking the lube will hold them up in the case a little higher. We'll see... :o

Never played with a 357 or 38 but used to put 00 buckshot in a 410 for my girlfriend when we deer hunted together.  Don't think she ever fired a shot.  Back then, 000 buck had not been introduced.  I just opened the 3" 410 shell, poured out the shot, and refilled with 00 buckshot.

Though she never bagged a buck, she rarely came home with a lonely feeling.

wouldn't a .36 cal round ball work? you could probably load 2 over a gas check just weigh both balls and the gas check all together and use starting load data for Tite group or trailboss or even unique for that weight bullet and work up from there.

Sounds like it would be fun for small game and tin cans. ;)

I just went to Track of the Wolf and ordered 100 .358 round balls. When they get here I'll load some up and try them. I'll post the results. ;D

I will do my best to find the link. But i have read that when shooting round balls in .357 / 38 it was very hard to get a proper spin on the bullet because of the more shallow grooves in modern firearms. So accuracy was poor even at 20 yards in a handgun, in a rifle the range an accuracy improved.

I have been wondering about this myself.  Here are a couple of links of related ammo:

My expectations aren't real high.
I just thought it would be fun to play around with.
I remember reading the article and I always wanted to try it out.
With a littlel luck I'll get to try it out this weekend.

i have  a remington box each  of  38 and 357  minus   a few i play with

they shot very well.....within 3 inches at  100 feet

i  also loaded up many  double ball loades  in  38 and 357  with  OOO buck
also  liked the  44 mag with  2 balls  of  .440 diameter

the trick to this load  is to  NOT  try to push them too hard

another interesting load............
OO buck.....primer only.....place t-shirt patch  over the casing
...place ball over the case mouth and push it  in
...trim  patch with  knife.......use a pencil for a ram rod
put on you safety glasses  and practice your quick draw and point shooting
           the neighbors will never  know
when drugs are outlawed only out laws will have drugs
DO WHAT EVER IT TAKES TO STOP A DEMOCRAT
OBAMACARE....the biggest tax hike in the  history of mankind
