Project idea / think tank help wanted
« on: May 12, 2011, 09:09:07 PM »
I've dabbeled with machining barrels for model cannons, and built several noise makers.  I have one tube that I made that has fired cottonballs and newspaper loads for a couple years.  I turned the O.D. straight, drilled and reemed the bore to .405 inches, wall thickness is .310 inches.  So it is just a noise maker. (Machined from hot rolled round stock) Both the muzzle and breech ends are cut flat with squared corners.  I want to make it look like a period cannon by mounting it on some kind of base (either wheeled or sled) that will not require a trunion type mounting.  So what am I looking for?  At 4 3/4 inches length it's too long to be a mortar.

How about a picture?  It sounds somewhat like a Lyle gun (used for projecting lines to ships in distress.)

Ok, me and pic's aint gettin along right now, here are a couple of attachments.  It's mounted in a functional sled like holder, effective but far from attractive.

the casket looking mount is interesting, and so is the tall assembly with the heavy beam construction.

Maybe one of these.

I may not be completely sane, but at least I don't think I have the power to influence the weather.

Thought of one of those a while back, gave up on it.  May bring it back though.

like I said functional.  I'd like to give it a pleasing form now.  Parts on hand at the time, ya know.

I've got another tube mounted with a "speed rail" fitting.  It was made to test some high pressure Ampco since it survived provisional proof loads another heavier piece was chosen to build a heavy walled boomer.
