Ruger Super Blackhawk Hunter??
« on: September 19, 2011, 12:23:17 PM »
Hey guys I just recently came into a SBH 44 magnum. I ended up trading my 50th anniversary Blackhawk flattop 44 magnum for it. I really liked the flattop but I like the larger grip frame on the SBH better. The hunter came with a 2x weaver scope also. I was wondering how many of u own and like this pistol. I have been wanting a dedicated pistol to hunt with over some of my greenfields. So far the gun has been very accurate with some of my milder handloads I had for the flattop but soon I will start loading up some hunting rounds for it with my leftover H110, 2400 and 4227. Any information about these pistols would be greatly appreciated.

Nice revolver.  I had one, but sold it.  It basically is a Super Blackhawk  with the the longer Dragoon style grip, only with a rounded trigger guard, and a heavy barrel rib with scope mounting dove tails.  The square back trigger guards used on the non hunter models have a reputation of smacking some peoples middle fingers.  Great platform if you are using optics, with a muzzle heavy feel that reduces muzzle flip.  Mine was quite accurate.  It will take any grips that fit the standard, square back trigger guard SBH.

41/44/45 Bisley Hunters here...  Now that you pose the question I don't think I have ever fired the 44...  The 41 and 45 shoot good.  Scope mounting system works fine.   Guess I need to shoot the 44 huh?

Thanks for the replies I like the pistol very much. Took more getting use to the scoped handgun than I thought it would, but it for sure isn't as easy to pack around as the flattop was. So far at 80 yds I can keep a decent group going but not as comfortable there as I am at 50 yards just gonna keep practicing. U definitely notice all the wobbles looking through a 2x pistol scope. How long did it take y'all to get used to it?

44 mag SBHH Bisley.  Great gun.  The best groups done with it were using 12.5 grains of blue dot and 240 grain xtp hornady bullet.  I was able to print a 3" group scoped/benched at 100 yds.  The velocity was just over 1000 fps and I decided to reload hotter loads for it.  I was never able to beat the 3" group with any other load.  I need to reload some more of the 12.5 grain blue dot again.
One thing against it for hunting is that it is way too heavy to carry in any holster.

Thanks gamba at 50 yards it will put all 5 shots into a 3 inch circle with 7.5 grains of universal over a 240 gr cast swc.  Also at 80 yards the same load will keep all 5 shots towards the center of paper about 4 inches low. With 10 grains of unique it only kept 2 or 3 out of 5 I'n the paper. Also the universal has been more accurate across the board. I do not have blue dot but I have green dot but havn't tried it yet. Mainly been shooting light loads to get use to the new gun. Trigger is pretty hard not as smooth as my 50th anniversary flattop 44.

A cheap fix to your hard trigger.  Remove your grip panels.  At the top of the grip frame, you'll notice there is a coil spring that attaches to studs on each side of the frame.  It's the trigger return spring.  Un-hook the spring leg from one of the studs.  This will make a big difference in your trigger pull.  I have owned about a dozen Blackhawks over the years, and it has worked well on all of mine.   You are right about the 50th Flat Top.  They must have taken a little extra care in that one.  Mine is the smoothest out of the box Ruger I have shot.

As far as holsters, for a rig that heavy, I would look at a good shoulder holster.  I had one made up by El Paso Leather years ago for my scoped Redhawk that works well.  I have a similar nylon Uncle Mikes rig that works, but it is stiff, and uncomfortable.

Thanks big easy. Yeah I took one of the legs off your talking about but sometime the hammer and cylinder would tie up. That happened to u? Well I put it back on, but I'm starting to think it was just fouling up cause the loads were very dirty. It was 10 grains of unique over 240 gr swc. The bullet was cast by a guy locally and the lube seemed dirty. U think that was more likely the case of the gun tying up instead of the poor mans trigger Job? Thanks
