Got to see some new Handis yesterday
« on: May 11, 2011, 05:36:22 AM »
I found a new (to me) gun store in Caneyville KY yesterday.  They had quite a selection of single shot rifles (Handis, CVA, Rossi).  Of greatest interest were two Handis.  One was a 35 Rem and the other was an Ultralight 7mm-08.  Both seemed to be on nice build quality.  They both had camoflage stocks that I personally did not like.  The stocks, while not youth stocks, were at least a half inch shorter than the standard synthetic handi stock and had a very narrow check rest that was uncomfortable to me.  Otherwise, the 7mm-08 was tantilizing light in weight.  Both were set up for scopes, no iron sights.

Also on his shelf was an HX serial numbered 44mag Handi, a new (apparently, or at least unsold) 30-30 that had the Williams rear sight, yet also had an ejector.  I could not see that it was marked as used and the price relative to the other Handi's indicated that as well.

That is very good for a small town.  I went to a Cheboygan, MI gun show a week ago and found only one Handi.  They advertised 250 tables.  It was .30-06 which I don't need cause I have one, and it was over priced..  And that was it.  They all had a lot of black rifles at enormous prices.  My thought on that has always been, that outside of combat, if you can't do it with one shot you shouldn't have a rifle in your hands.

xhare,

you saw both a 44Mag and 30-30 in the same store at the same time?  Unreal, I have never seen either of those calibers in the gun stores around here.  I think it is an omen, you need to go back and buy one of them. ::)

bikerbeans,

I had a similar thought.  Until recently I had only seen ONE new 30-30 on a sales rack.  I had seen a few used ones from time to time (and bought one of them).  They are great shooters so I see why they are hard to come by.  The 35 Rem and 7mm-08 superlight were certainly bonuses as well.

My palms were sweaty to be sure.  But I held firm and did not buy anything.  My gun case is overflowing and I need to thing the herd first.

No, ya got it backward.  What you do is buy what you want and then go home and figure out what you don't need.

I forgot to mention that they also had a 357 Talo, and two standard 22 hornets with open sights.  That was the first time I had seen either of those as well.  All in all, a great Handi day!!

Doc,

A pound would be nice at deer camp this fall.  I'm the cook and the others are too busy watchin' DVDs at night to pay much attention to me in the kitchen. ;)

Thanks Doc, assuming my CRS doesn't get worse I will remind you.  Maybe we need to trade recipes on the squeezin's?  I studied under a old distiller from Middlesboro, KY back in the early 80s. 8)

Does anyone know if the 7mm-08 Lwt in a camo stock is just a special run or is it going to be available item.
Sure hope they make it available.

My wifes grandmother, a French Canadian made head cheese that was the best I ever eat. Sometimes we take a
ride across the border into Quebec and buy some at small markets. Great eats.
