Coyotes have spread across the country on their own.  Not only have they reached to east coast, they have moved up into Alaska.  The state biologist have determined that the largest preditor of our declining Dall Sheep in the spring time is the Coyote.

I have a proposal before our game board to remove all restrictions on shooting Coyotes in Alaska.  No closed season, no limits.  I shoot everyone I can get my sites on.  If the pelt is good I'll skin it and sell the pelt.  If the pelt is no good I leave it for the ravens, and follow the three Ss.

When visiting friends and relatives in Texas, Tennessee, North Carolina, and Virginia, we go out calling and shooting Coyotes.

A couple days ago I posted about having shot a coyote chasing a doe in NC, near Raleigh. It was the first one I've actually seen in the woods, though I hear them nightly. Pictures below

Heartland Outdoors website and Outdoor Life say the deer population is dropping. A friend of mine saw a coyote chasing a doe and two others got ahead of it trying to tire it out. I think collaring fawns is the only accurate way to tell since they are most vulnerable.

I know some cattle outfit that hire helicopter/hunter and hunt coyotes.  Our deer season tags for deer quotes are release after winter and there based on buck/doe ration.  Some years winter (weather) kill is worst than others and I'm sure there is some deer killed off from coyotes but we do have lions.  Lion/bear are consider predator here and if it's proven they killed any livestock rancher is paid market value and the bear/lion is killed and I know Wy has that same law.  Couple years ago they ran a total money paid to ranchers for livestock killed by bear/lion/wolf in the Rocky Mtn States was a big amount of money.

Heard a report this morning on the radio from the folks at National Geographic, (You know the head bunny huggers).  They are concerned that the cross breeding of Coyotes and Eastern Wolves may have a detrimental affect on the wolf population.

Seems the wolves and Coyotes are crossing and producing hybrids.  This animals are heavier jawed than Coyotes, with bigger bodies.  The Hybrid is far more aggressive than a Coyote.  A single Hybrid is capable of pulling a mature Deer down, and making a kill.  In a pack it is possible for these animals to kill a yearling cow.  Any Cow in the process of calving would be in real trouble if a pack of these Hybrids came across her.  Sooner or later it's going to come about that a child will be caught by one of these animals.  You say NO!  I remember just a few years ago, a family was out for a walk on Elmendorf AFB.  Young couple with a two year old kid.  The kid was riding a Big Wheel on the bike path.  The kid would run a way ahead then turn and go back past the parents for a short ways then turn and catch up and pass the parents again.  Well on one of his turns while ahead of the parents a Coyote ran out of the woods bordering the path, and grabbed the kid.  The Coyote was trying to drag the kid into the woods.  The father ran forward and picked up a stick.  The Coyote knowing the father was too big to confront, turned the kid loose and ran.  Now how about a more aggressive Hybrid, will it drop the kid and run?  Or will it fight?  What if the hybrids are in a pack?  Remember two years ago we lost a Teacher to wolves.  They killed and ate her.  Give them time, the Hybrids will learn Humans are just another source of protein.  Easier to kill than Deer.

Many a doe seen with out a fawn this year in my neck of the woods. Some DNR officals would like you to be so stupid that you think they were all really old does. That just is not the case, as many of the does have the normal look of yearlings.
When an Amblance runs down the road with the siren going and set off such a din of howling you can hardly hear your self think that is to many.

For most people we live in a "disney" world.  They dont' realize the kill or be killed in nature.  I've had people want to bless me out for killing the poor little wild dogs.  I just hope they don't take to liking to eat children.

I have a few $.02 on this subject.

-  I will shoot every coyote I see or am able to call in.  When those that are left reproduce I will shoot them too.

-  Seems about the most prolific animal around here to hunt is the coyote, and the squirrels that they haven't figured out how to decimate yet.

-  The wolf and coyote were nearly exterminated for a reason.

seems i read a article, can remember in what mag, maybe field and stream. where they radio collared pregnant does. i think it was in the carolinas.they said that coyotes were responsible for like 60% of fawn fatalities.maybe more.in fact i think it was 60% of fawns born were eatin by yotes.in this particular study.they captured the pregnant does and inserted transmitters that would be ejected upon birthing.it was very scary to say the least.but coyotes are very smart,in the last 20 yrs ive shot every one thats showed up around here in the daylight.they dont show up around here in the daylight anymore, period.like i said yotes are smart, ive seen them walk thru herds of deer, they make a lil run at them and if they all act healthy they move on.dont think they cant smell afterbirth and a fawn

Believe it or not, I took part in that study as some of my property joins the Savannah River Site in Aiken, SC.  I allowed them to track the fawns on my property several years ago.   The coyotes don't bother full grown deer.  They go after the fawns. If I remember correctly, they could only find 3 out of 15.  Most of the remains were studied when found and it was coyotes.  I trap and kill as many as I can.  Some things I have learned is that they are almost as smart as a coon.  They will dig traps up if not prepared correctly.  They love bacon grease as that is all I use.  They also smell really bad.  The worst stench I've ever smelled has been around a den site.  They will roll in dead carcuses to leave their scent. Coyotes are here to stay in the Southeast.  They are moving in from western states. Longer summers and more food.  They have hurt the rabbit/quail population worse than the deer.   There is nothing you can do.
