WHAT ARE THEY

I can't find a spot so move it if you must.
I have been watching a couple of birfs the last two days.
They appear to be larger than Hawks--as big as Eagles?
They have a dark body color, heads are dark
Wings have a whit swath around the wing--just inside the wing tips--appears to be about a 1/4 of the wing.
Thought itmay be Osprey but the heads are dak.
they appear to be a couple or brother/sister?

Golden Eagles are all darkish.
look like a Bald eagle only a brown with blonde streakes all over.

Golden Eagles I have seen look the color of a dark Irish setter dog. What you may be seeing is a young Baldy

They resemble pictures of young Golden Eagles---but this is not a typical range for them.
I have not seen a Baldy--young or old that looks like these two. we have several groups of baldys that have moved in along the coast in the last several ago.

We have quite a few baldy's here now , we had none 10 years or so ago. Maybe the Golden is moving in. I have watched young baldy's learning to fly and hunt with adult birds on two different times and what you decribe sounds like the young I saw.

The increase of Golden Eagles has really hurt the Big Horn Sheep population.

Normally I would say  :o 
But a few years ago I was driving to the National training center in Southern California outside of Barstow and saw a golden eagle on the side of the road eating road kill, and did not think much of it till I got about 50 yards from it and it started to fly away, Holding the road kill, A FULL SIZED coyote.  growing up i would see hawks pick up a rabbit and fly off, and that is what i thought this was till I saw the coyote and how full his neck looked, making him look older or fully grown.
I some times wonder if the road kill was hit by a car a few minutes earlier or if the Eagle did in the yote.
I can see where an eagle could pick off young animals and fly off to devour them.
The Plains indians talk of the thunder bird that carrys young buffalo, in rainy weather, a small sheep could look like a buffalo.

Sounds like an eagle from Mexico call a caracara. We have a few of them in central florida.

Osprey are very sleak looking... They do not look like an eagle or a hawk. 

When you see a golden you say, "Holy cr*p that thing is huge!" 

I agree with many above, I bet it's an immature bald eagle.

Buzzards or vultures look like the scavangers they are... you won't see them and think of an eagle.

      they could knock a goat off a cliff wall and eat it on the ground but couldn't pick it up.bald eagles only weight about 14/17 pounds.

Better check out the pictures as that was what it was doing , but who knows it pictures are real.

I had the same thing happen to me last year at the (about Feb/March), a massive bird that I had never seen before was eating off a deer carcass below my house. We have all kinds of turkey vultures around here and this thing dwarfed them. I got a good look at it and crossed it with pictures on the internet and it was in fact a golden eagle. I live in southern Wisconsin, so out of it's territory I know, but they do have wings and he did move on...

Could be eagles or vultures. The black vultures has a dark head . Get a good book on birds for ID. Immature eagles sometimes look as you describe.

Here are some decent shots of immature bald eagles. I saw one once and was quite baffled and I had to look it up. It looked just like the size of the adults I see but it was black with white streaks and impressive in wing span.  I love that bald eagle sightings have gone from very rare to quite common around here in the pas ten years. I even see their nests sometimes
