Straight Stocked Marlin .30-30

A local pawn shop has a CBS straight stocked .30-30 in nearly perfect condition for $299.00.  The wood is walnut with no checkering.  How old do you think it would be?

For $300, I'd snap it up no matter how old or young it was!  Back to the question, I can't really tell without a serial number.

The older cowboy models had 24" barrels. The newer has 20" barrels but are checkered. If it's 20" or !8&1/2" it is probably a Texan. The first Texans were 20" and later runs were 18 & 1/2. The marauders were 16 & 1/4" and only nfg 2 years. All non checkered and straight stocks.
The Marauders are the rarest models of the marlin levers except for some commenorative models. But the rarest production guns with only a little over 5,000 produced in 2 calibers.  ;)

I went back and got it.  It looks nearly new.  It's marked 336TS and came with a Bushnell 4X Sportview, hammer extension, and some See-Thru mounts for $279.00.

i have a 1973 sporter in 44 mag.,less than 1500 of these were made and it is a regular production rifle. the top rifle is a first year 1895 in 45-70 serial number B001920,the botton rifle is the 1894 sporter in 44 mag,serial numbe 27087056. eastbank.

Swampman,

    The straight stocked older Marlin's in .30-30, Texans included, are highly regarded and in my experience highly sought after.  If you go a large gunshow, and look at all of the used guns, you are very lucky if you find even one for sale.   They typically command a premium of $75 to $100 over the pistol grip models.  They are lightening quick getting to your shoulder and are much handier to carry than the pistol grips. 

   Assuming the rifle is in VG+ condition, then $279 is an absolute steal.  They typically go for $395 to $450.

Swampy, Have you shot it yet? Does it shoot 1/4" groups with factory Core-loks?  ;) Just joking, but some Marlins are suprisingly accurate.

Most of the Marlin .30-30s I've owned would shoot about 1" groups @100 yards.  I didn't take it to the range yesterday because I had so many rifles that I'd put new scopes on that I didn't think I'd have time.

    I'm very glad to hear that you picked up that rifle.  The guy in the pawnshop probably looked up a value for the regular Marlin 336C in pricing it.

    I also hope you get to take it out deer hunting.  You will find that it is a joy to carry.  A fixed compact 2.5 scope would be a great addition.

Swampy, I'm glad you got that Marlin.  I've got one of those straight-grip ones, only in 35 Remington.  It's one of only two guns that I have with a scope.  I put a Bushnell 1.5 to 4.5 on it.  I hear Mannyrock though.  In my own experience I mostly leave mine on 2.5.  It's a tackdriver with 200 gr Corelocts and with the RCBS cast 200 grain bullet.  I'll bet your new 30-30 won't disappoint you one bit.
