double banded brooke
« on: April 17, 2011, 05:24:05 PM »
well i sat down and looked at both prints, the 300 lb parrot and double banded brooke.  couldn't decide which one to build so i did what any educated man would do. ...   i flipped a coin. and the brooke one. so i have started turning a 1/6 scale brooke rifle out of some 5in steel i have. well it ends up being 1/5.9 but its close. to 1/6the scale.  i am half way through turning the out side of the gun so i am now dedicated into this gun so i have to see it through. the carriage will be interesting, i am going with the carriage that is in the plans, the wooden naval center pivot carriage. lots of parts, and details to build. but i will just finish the barrel first. I plan to do this gun with as much detail as i can handle because this one is mine and will not make another, way to much time involved in these types of builds.   god bless you guys at sea coast i can only imagine how much time you guys have in your guns.

and me trying to lift this steel into the lathe by myself was a little interesting.  i couldn't hold it up with one arm to get the live center in. i had to put a steel pipe on the lathe and then over my shoulder with a strap to get leverage to get the steel up high enough to get the live center in.  fun fun.

Since I assume you aren't ready to build a travelling crane over your lathe, try an engine hoist.  If, that is, the space under the lathe is clear.   :D

yea, i have one in the other room of hte shop, but i havent raised the lathe enough to get it under the lathe. the foot break bar goes across the floor.  and i dont normally build things on this lathe this big.  but i am young and can handle a little weight.  the steel weighed about 167 lbs.  not to bad. but not light.

Rick,   If you want to save your back a bit, then take a look at these pics.  This is the unconventional, but stable, engine hoist configuration we have used for 6 years to move our 200 to 240 Lb. steel rounds in our shop to get them on and off the lathe or rifling machine.

Tracy and Mike

The configuration.  Note that the lifting hook is in front of the wheels and frame front end to avoid hitting the lathe's emergency brake bar pedal.

A look at the bottom support structure, heavy at the back end (290 Lbs.) for counterbalance and wide at the front for stability.

The front end rotates left to snatch the Treble-Banded Brooke off the Rifling Machine when complete.

We should have a couple video clips of rifling machine operation in 2-3 days.  We are just getting back on the treble-banded Brooke cannons full time after the Krupp cash flow adventure.

I understand that, golf ball mortars, and lead sales  have payed for most of my tooling.  i timed my lathe last night, it takes 13 mins. todo one cut down the length of the tube,   so i sit there in my chair looking over the prints for hte carriage so I hope to have them memorized by the time it comes to build it.

Rampa Room Artillery brought this tube to the Capron NSSA shoot this last weekend. Very, very nice looking!

This is going to be one cool gun.

Fine work Rick, I especially like the job you did on the ouside breech face radius.
Hey Rick, do you like to fish by any chance? :) ;D :D
RIP John. While on vacation July 4th 2013 in northern Wisconsin, he was ATVing with family and pulled ahead of everyone and took off at break-neck speed without a helmet. He lost control.....hit a tree....and the tree won.  He died instantly.

Mike and I like the Double-Banded Brooke a lot, Rick.  Even with the can there, it looks big.  Did you say 1/6 scale?  Mike guesses 65 Lbs on the tube weight; I'm thinking maybe 82 Lbs.  Are we close?  I really like the Chassis too, especially the attention to detail in the rear iron 'Bumpers' and the staggered hole pattern for the iron plates on the Chassis rails.  What are you planning to shoot from your Brooke?

yes kabar i will be up there with my stuff, let me know when you wanna come by.

i have made a simple drop out mold in 1-3/16 by 1.7 inchs long. i have molded lead bolts from it. that i plan to try out but they might be alittle heavy.  we will see, I hope to get a chance to shoot it today or tommarrow. with some pics. because I might sell it next weekend at nationals if someone comes up with the right amount of money.
not sure tho. i might keep this one for me.     as far as weight i wil have to weigh it.  I can tell you its around 75 lbs. for the barrel, and the carriage and rails are about 17 lbs.  not sure tho  will have to weigh it.

this was a fun build. and plan to do a 300 lb parrot next. in 1/6 scale.  with iron carriage. like yours  but i am still have to get a milling machine to mill out the I beams.  so for now everything shall be wood carriages.
