Longshot powder

Went to the Hodgen/IMR/Winchester web site. What caught my eye was Longshot powder gave the highest fps in the .40S&W and the .45acp. Never tried it myself, just wondering if anybody has has any luck with it? gypsyman

Based on John Knuteson's article at Handloads.com (currently seems to be down) I loaded up several sets of .45 ACP to use in my NMB acp cylinder with 11-14gr of Longshot.  Very good accuracy and at the upper couple, very high recoil.  I decided that for most of my shooting I prefer to get to that performance level using H-110 in my .45 Colt, because of better bullet selection and weight for hunting.  I was impressed and keep a little long shot on hand to play with here and there.  If the Handloads.com website comes back up, I highly recommend it as it's a good read.

As John points out, these loads aren't for any auto-loading pistol on the market.  If you drop a few grains you could probably use them in a +P rated auto, however.  They were all safe in my Blackhawk and I had almost no primer flattening except on the last set of 14gr.

I've been using longshot in some 9mm luger handload to shoot out of a 16" carbine.  Even at the starting loads I have velocities over 1400 fps with 125 gr bullets.

I've been using Longshot for several years now.   Our local PD went with Remington Golden Saber as their duty load. One of the other officers on my department and I split 500 165 gr. Golden Sabers and I worked up several loads with Longshot.  Remington's data for the 165 gr. Golden Saber is listed at 1150 fps.  He was using a Glock 22 with a 6" ported barrel and averaged 1185 fps.  My Sig 2340 averaged 1143 so that load is right in the ballpark to duplicate the factory load.  Using a rest, us nearly blind old guys were tearing the daylights of 3" Sigh-n-See targets at 25 yds.  There is certainly more felt recoil but to date I haven't seen any signs of over pressure (flattened primers or bulged cases).  I also use Longshot for my P12.45 45 ACP loads with good results.
