Replanting after the deluge

After nearly constant rains lately we did get enough dry days to re till and replant.  I finally gave up on the first planting of sweet corn and tilled the few straggling  plants that managed to not rot in the ground under.  As a few of them managed to germinate I kept hoping the rest would make it but had to finally face facts.  I also planted a row of bush beans and several rows of okra.  I had managed to get about 30 tomato plants in and will either have them coming out my ears or the blight will get them and have none.  There doesn't seem to be any half ways to it.  I know what do I need with 37 tomato plants.  I planted two seed packages and I think every seed came up.  I still had about 15 or so plants t take down to my father in law.    He lives about 80 miles south of me and his garden looked great.  The sugar snaps are finally beginning to look better as with all the rain they did not have a real good looking color.  We are susposed to have four sunny days in a row and am hoping this will perk up everything.

held off on the bush beans, sweet corn, cucumbers, and tomatoes until after the rains eased.  Still with the cold snap I am not very hopeful, but I gotta try.

Here it comes again.  Today is the last dry day and then probable rain for the next seven days.  Maybe I should sell my tiller, buy a water buffalo and just plant rice.  Sure hope I see some sprouts today before the next round hits.  Only perhaps saving grace is that this next rain session comes with warm temperatures.

I can relate a bit....A couple of years ago I lost all my plants to hail.  The hail came so hard and were so large that they made holes in our window screens.  It was really depressing to see everything wiped out and there was nothing I could do. 

Hope you can still have enough growing season and enough dry weather to get some more plants etc in the ground.

We only have a small garden (8'x24'), but I was finally able to plant last Tuesday.  I got 10 tomato plants, some zuchini, and three small rows of corn.  The garden is at my mom's house, and I went and looked at it today. I have lost 1 tomato plant, and tow good rows of corn and the zuchini is looking good.  This is the first year, that we did not plany crook neck sqush and okra.  Was not going to plant, as I was PCSing to Germany next week, but my orders got cancelled. Bought plants, and then got hit with a TDY for almost four months.  Oh well, the wife and mom will get to eat the stuff.

I am at the computer looking out some sliding glass doors at the rain.  It looks as if we will miss the biggest part of it at least for now.  Radar shows the 'red' patches going slightly above us.  I didn't see anything new coming up yesterday and spent most of the day cutting grass and carrying the clippings to the garden for mulch.  I did spade up a small plot and plant some yard long bean seeds that a friend gave me.  We will see what happens.  I only half jokingly told my wife that I put some beans out  to drown.  On the up side all the tiny tree sprouts that came from Burgress seed Co have shown signs of life.  I wouldn't have bet a nickle on any of them living when I first saw them.  The last one was showing signs of life yesterday.  Just think, in 20 or so years I will have some fine, large trees and I will be only 90 or so.  Now if I can only get my walnut plantation going.   To support me in my old age you know.
