students get unique flying field trip
« on: May 13, 2011, 02:41:37 AM »
I arranged this with my glider flying club as part of one of our school's career exploration activities. After flying the students the pilot in the video then flew his glider (the one parked behind me) and did a 360 mile out and return!
After bringing up the opening page click on the glider picture.

Awesome stuff!!! I've had a hankering to add a glider rating onto my ticket for a while now.  Only downside is the closest local club is almost 2 hours away. Not a terrible drive, but not short either.

Any idea how much it would take for a PPL-ASEL who hasn't flown in a few years to get ready for the exam?

Man I stink with computers. I sat and watched that whole video that was the size of a postage stamp before I figured out that I could blow it up. :P  Looks like fun.
Hi NSA! Can you see how many fingers I am holding up?

I am not sure of the specifics but if you are a power pilot you get quite a bit of credit for your experience (glider rating does not give you any credit toward power however.  :() but still will have to take the written, probably 10-15 duel flights with an instructor, a bit of solo time and then the check ride. You do not need a medical. Gliders are quite a bit different to fly and I have seen active Air Force pilots humbled on their first couple of flights. ;D
