anybody have this problem with imr3031
« on: May 09, 2011, 12:53:41 PM »
i bought a nef handi in 2005 at that time i loaded some test loads with 3031 24gr  w/50 and 55gr bullets so a mid lvl load.
test were good no pressure signs both shot well enough for further testing so i loaded 50 of the 50gr and thats as far as i got(had to get a new barrel fitted for my nephew to hunt deer with) i ended up buying a house and with moving and it took awhile to set up my gun room etc.

Anyway fast forward 6yrs i now have an AR so in the interest of loading in volume i decided to switch powders to something that meters better(H335) so at my last range session i decided to shoot all the old ammo i had.i loaded up these old reloads and commenced to shooting 1 full mag no problem 2nd mag 3rd shot gun jammed i racked the action round wouldn't chamber. i figured it was dirty np (appr. 300rnds fired since cleaning ) so i put it down and picked up my Nef 2nd shot the case popped out missing the neck (case broke at the transition shoulder to neck) neck was left in the chamber after checking the Ar it had the same a broken neck stuck in the chamber. i got both out with a cleaning rod and a bronze brush.

Now for my ?  has anyone had a problem with reloads and age? old reloads and 3031?  3031 and temp difference? any other ideas what might have caused this?

Started loading in 1971, and have loaded thousands and thousands of rounds. I don't really know how many rounds of 3030 I've loaded with DuPont IMR3031, but it's most likely close to a thousand before I switched to another powder. Never had a problem with it, except it doesn't cycle well in an RCBS powder dispenser.
I think you have a brass problem that has nothing to do with age, but rather annealing. Was the brass used when you got it?

Then I think you just found your problem. Someone was playin re loader that knew very little about annealing.

yes i considered that but it was lc brass that still had the crimp around the primer which i used a hornady primer pocket trimmer to remove.

I really don't use IMR 3031 anymore. I used to use it in the 308 some. One of the reasons being it doesn't meter well, longer sticks. I think it would be more difficult in a smaller case. For most of my 223 loading I've moved over to TAC & Exterminator. I did use H-335 for a while too, but found TAC cleaner.

I'm not sure if 3031 is the right speed for your auto loader, but I would agree that it sounds more like a brass issue than powder.  I haven't shot AR's since the Army, maybe someone else would know if that is a good powder for them.  DP

i've already switched powders to h335 that was the reason i decided to use up all my old reloads. the ones that i shot seemed to run the gun ok, i just wanted something that meters better from my uniflow.i was wondering if i should be worried about the age of some of my reloads,i have some 30-30 from the same time
