Single shot rifle idea
« on: April 24, 2011, 04:19:03 PM »
Some of you might be familar with the Pack Rifle. A 1lbs take down 22rf rifle. Weel it seems that the same design could be used with other rimmed ammo. Such as the 357mag./38 special or 45 long colt. Any thoughts?

You could cut down a handi in a suitable caliber (so long as you keep it legal).

+1 on cutting down a Handi. I can't believe the difference since I had the barrel of my 223 synthetic cut to 16 1/2".

Here's my 16.5 Handi .357 Maximum.  The Red Dot is gone replaced with glass.  I'm getting new eyeglasses this week, so I think I'll take the big scope off it and replace it with a scout mount that I have.

You could keep the weight down by using a low wall action.  I don't have one to compare to a Handi, but IIRC they are a little smaller in the action area.  With a thin barrel you'd have a pretty light little gun.

Have you heard of the 'Chicoppee' action?  It was created by Frank DeHaas and written up in his "Mr Single Shot's Book of Rifle Plans"  It is a fairly straight forward action buildable in a small shop.  You could do it with limited machines if you have the skill.  It's also a fairly streamlined action and can be built in either rimfire or small centerfire (two builds are shown in the book, a 22lr and a centerfire that was something like a 218 or a 22hornet).  A few guys on the web have put up pictures of their pistol caliber builds.  There is one on weapons guild being built as a single shot pistol in 45LC.  357mag should be fine.  357max might be a bit over reaching, but the mag should be OK with proper material selection.

Check out DeHaas' book if you are thinking of a single shot rifle build.  He has a few books, all are worth getting if you can find them.

A Contender30-30 Win. carbine with a 21" factory tapered barrel with wood, and 4X Weaver weighs just over #5. If one started shaving components the weight could be dropped quite a bit I think. The expense could be kept within reason.
