Rock walk question
« on: September 03, 2011, 01:53:35 PM »
Hey Graybeard's...

I built a "hell for stout" rock walk-way from my driveway to my front deck.  Used found flat rocks from 8-12 inches thick and planted them with quickcrete.  Ive got 1- 4 inches between the individual rocks, with the rocks sticking say 3 -4 inches above the mortar.

What I'd like to do now is fill in most of the space between the rocks with some type of colored mortar that would add some class plus seal the area from collecting dirt, leaves, weeds and what-have-you.  I'm hand mixing but don't know what I should use?  Probably take about 2 - 80 lb bags to fill the voids.

What have you used that you could recommend or advise against.

Any help will be appreciated.

thats gonna be a tough call. actual mortar i would think is not made for 4 inch gaps. im thinking it would crack.one thing you might try is rolling up some chicken wire and stuffing it down in the larger gaps then working the mortar down in to it.kind of like reinforcing wire in a slab to keep it from cracking.tap the stones a lot to settle it.also visit the quickcrete web site. they have lots of diff products for all different applications.lots of them yull not see at lowes or local box store. some of the plastic patch cements may work in your situation.also it goin to be hard to do a neat looking job of it.look at some of the acid wash products used to get excess mortar off block walls to wash the stones when you get done.

Quick-Crete makes a product called Sand Topping mix. I think that is about what you need, it is about the same as the regular concrete mix but only sand, no rock, so it fills uneven spaces easily. You can get coloring agents to mix in cement.

If this is the stuff used to finish pavers then I agree.  The stuff used for pavers looks like sand and you just brush it into place then water it down.  Sets up very well and lasts a long time.  Been over 10 years since I used the stuff so I can't remember the exact name.

Thanks to all for your replies.  I'll check out the Quick Crete web site and see what products they carry for filling between rocks.  I had not heard about Sand Topping mix, but sounds like it would be easy to use.  Will check to see what they carry for "color" to mix in.

Your advice is much appreciated!
