I got the new 94 bloody!
« on: March 08, 2011, 06:34:48 AM »
I picked up this 94 a couple weeks ago to use as the truck/barn gun. Was out feeding horses and spotted a coyote give or take 150 yards out.  So I made a bark sound to stop him. I put the bead a hair above his mellon and let one rip.  The 170 grain federal flipped him over backwards like he was hit by a bat. I doubt he felt a thing as it turned his head into a taco. In case anybody is wondering, I killed him because the coyotes have taken better then 10 of my hens in past year. Was time to even it up a bit.

Nice shot!  Lot more satisfying than doing it with a scoped bolt action ain't it.

Them young eyes help an awful lot.  Mine are so bad that with open sites I couldn't hit the side of a barn if I was inside of it!!!

Anybody who says a 30-30 lever wont get the job done better be standing 300+ yards away when they call me a liar! Just kidding, I did have a advantage and that is I been pitching bullets across our fields for 35 years. I know who what and where I can get away with ;) But if you cant kill a dog size critter with a rifle at 150 you NEED practice!

Yea, I noticed Richard. The 3030 as you know is a very old friend of mine. Rayzor I been shootin 3030 in the same rifle for 53 years, and that 300 yard shot ain't that big a deal either. I have had the Lyman aperture on it for almost 40 of those years, and recently added a Marbles Tang sight to the rifle. Been huntin and callin coyotes since 1969, so when you said you barked to stop him, I knew you'd hunted a few yourself.
The first coyote I ever called was with an old Johnny Stewart 45rpm record player call, with a dry cell battery, and a big 12 inch speaker. I'll bet that thing weighed 40 lbs, but I was younger then, and I killed him with my Winchester.

I cant say I ever packed a record player out in the brush before LOL.  But I pay attention to anything Johnny or Gerald Stewwart ever said about calling. I would like to try one of those tang sights for LONG shots. The reciever limits me to 300 and down. That s with it set at 2 inches high at 100 with the 170 grain. The 30-30 is a long range cartridge if you know how to figure trajectory ;)

Nice shootin'. I have a dog/hen problem too. I like the Lyman receiver sights better than Williams because they have the adjustable zero marker plate, and you can change settings quicker with the push button that Williams doesn't have. Have 'em on both my model 94s, and soon on the Miroku '92.

The 30-30 can actually hit something that far?  ::)   ;)  Just kidding, good shooting! Great way to baptize the gun.

I'm mighty glad to hear of your most excellent shooting with the carbine that I (we) love!  My 94 has the angle-eject feature and I mounted a Leupold 2X-7X scope.  Last year, I toppled a red stag with approx live weight of 400 lbs.  Winchester 30-30 is a KEEPER!
