These new magic keys
« on: February 14, 2013, 05:43:18 AM »
The new car has one of these new magic keys. Leave it in your pocket and simply push a button to start the thing. Door locks and trunk also respond to the magic.

I was impressed with the touchpad entry system on the '87 Ford, I thought the remote key fob on the '94, '97, and '00 Ford was pretty nice, all still had the touchpads and loved them.

I'm going to be honest here, I don't get the magic key. It still has the remote fob function, and you must carry it. It must go somewhere either a pocket or purse or console while you are out and about.

Gimmick or will I one day soon get it? The key attached to the fob makes sense enough. The VW switch blade key is cool enough, less cumbersome than the key permanently protruding.

By the way this is a '11 Nissan Altima Coupe. Nothing says "kids it's time to go" like a Coupe ;D . Wow dad, no room in the back! I hadn't noticed, I'll never be sitting there, oh well. ;)

our new buick has one too. I like the way it automaticaly unlocks the doors when you approach the car but am a bit old school and i guess id rather just have a key. Wife likes it though and its her car so i guess thats what matters.

I'm tickled to death to not have to carry keys anymore.  That little fob doesn't stab me in the leg. ;)

In 05 we bought a new Nissan Murano. The magic key is  the best. We have had to change the batteries in both fobs once, in 110,000 miles. Will never be without one again.

yes a spare is expensive regardless of
make, but not half as expensive as a
towtruck or locksmith. get a spare.

funny story.
a lady came in the shop i worked at
sobbing profusely " i can't get in my car! ! "
the shop foreman walked across the lot
with her to the shopping center next door
and he asked for the keys and stuck the
key in the door and opened the door and
she immediately stopped and asked how
the bleep he got in without the "clicker"
(the keyless remote)
18 MINUTES.  . . . . . .

Have to admit the remote functions can be handy sometimes, but if I had my choice I'd rather just have the old system that required only a plain, flat key.

No remote fob, no chips in the key, no big wad in your pocket.  For a couple bucks you could get a spare key made and carry it in your wallet.  Never thought it was any great hardship to insert the key in the lock and give it a quarter of a turn!

I have the same feelings on the subject.

I will admit I love the door keypad. Your kids can never again lock you out of your own car. Coworkers can securely access your car for a package. No need to retrieve the keys from the house if you simply want to get a forgotten coffee cup off of the dash. Leave the keys in the car and lock it while hunting no worry about lost or jingling keys. It was VERY hard not to buy another Ford for this feature alone.

yup my feelings exactly.and a key wired up under the bumper has got me out of a few jams over the years.i can only own vehicles made before 2000, anything after that is beyond my skill set to repair.if i cant repair it i cant own it. plain and simple.
