Bear mauling
« on: May 17, 2011, 07:48:08 AM »
Got the paper this morning.  Buried back in Section B was a story about a Nome man that was Mauled Monday by a Brown Bear.  Three men were out hunting and one of the men passed the Bear on a snowmachine.  Bear wa lying down in a creek bed on the soft snow.  When the hunter passed the Bear attacked.  Even though the hunter was on his machine he was unable to avoid the onslaught.

The hunter was picked up by helicopter and taken to Nome.  Then by jet to Seattle.

This is our first Bear Mauling of the year that I remember.  I have been going out calling in the evening trying to call in a Black Bear we have seen the last two springs here near my house.  Want to take it before it runs into some of the kids in this highly populated area.

This is what happens when you live in an area where man is not at the top of the food chain.

That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

Found out more about this today at our weekly lunch.  A couple of the guys in our lunch group know the guy that got mauled.    This is what I was told today, slightly different from what was printed in the paper.

Three hunters were following Bear Tracks in the snow.  The bear went down into a ravine.  at the bottom the bear turned off and went up a side cut.  The three guys stopped on top and was looking around.  One decided to follow the tracks on down, thinking the other two wre following him.  After reaching the bottom he realized he was not seeing tracks anymore.  He stopped and got off his machine to look around.  As he got off the Bear hit him from the side.  The Bear only worked on his head.  One eye is gone, the cheek bone from the eye socket down to the mouth is missing.  I don't understand if his lower jaw is missing or just torn to pieces.  Massive lacerations across the rest of his head, needing hundreds of stitches.

I will be in the back country for 7 nights this August in northern BC on a billy goat hunt. We are on foot with everything in our packs in griz country. Must be very careful at all times. But with rifle in hand.

Nasty.

I'd love to hunt big browns someday, but I think my province is a lot safer with only the small blackies we have...

We got word today he is off the ventilator.  I had forgotten to mention that he was on one earlier.  I had been told, but it went right over my head.
