E.R. Shaw rebarrel to 35 Whelen Ackley Imp/Beautiful

Big Brown Truck finally came yesterday.  Really good workmanship.  Receiver completely cleaned and blued, bright metal is mirror polished........ Bead blasted Blue Matte barrel.
  I had fire-forming loads all ready to go, needed a little inletting on the old stock and free-float the barrel.  Went up today and sighted in.  What a sweet rifle to shoot.  Reminds me of the first time I shot a 45 Colt, thought the recoil was gonna knock me on my laurels....but a pleasant and fun firearm to shoot.  I could put 250's through this thing all day.

I'm interested in how it goes with E.R. Shaw also.  I've never had a chance to try them out, but now I can get my rifle rebarreled in a custom caliber as well as getting the action accurized for about 3 bills.  Not bad.  It almost sounds too easy  :? . What's the catch?

Anyone else had an experience with E.R. Shaw?  Good or bad I want to hear.

On the E.R. Shaw barrel question?

I have built over a dozens rifles using E.R. Shaw  barrels fitted by them.

I have a .458 Winchester Mag on 1914 Enfield Action that groups just under 3/4 inch for 3 shots at 100 Yds.
A 375 H&H on a 1917 Enfield Action that groups at just over .6 inch.
A 338 Winchester Mag on a 1914 Enfield Action that groups in the .3 to .4 inch range.
A 308 Norma Mag on a Savage 110 Action that groups in the .4 inch range.
A 257 Ackley Improved on a Santa Barbara Mauser that groups in the .5 inch range.
A 270 Winchester on a 1914 Enfield Action that groups in the .5 inch range.

The smallest group fired by me with a sporting rifle was with a Radom Mauser action with a Shaw .35 Whelen barrel in a MPI stock the group came in at .172 for 3 shots,  I put the rifle together for a friend and he was having trouble with the recoil from the bench so I had to show him how it was done.  This was using his handloads.

I also  used a Shaw barrel on a VZ24 action  in 6.5 x 55 that shot in the 1/2 inch range.

I have never used a Shaw barrel that would not group into less than 3/4 inch in any caliber using my handloads, the average for the dozen rifles is close to 1/2 inch.

Good barrels, good chamber and throat jobs, minimum break in time.

Also, I'm an old benchrest shooter and would have been happy to have had  the .35 whelen group from  my 6x47 or .222 Remington benchrest rifle in a competition match. 

I know a person who just had a Kreiger barrel installed on a Rem 700 Action and paid over $1500 dollars for it all said and done and he has yet to match any of the groups above with his handloads.

I had Shaw barrel one in 35 Whelan Imp about twenty years ago.This is one mean shootin machine.. Had it done in a 21 inch medium heavy barrel. I could not be more pleased. Shoots accurate groups and the bore is easily cleaned,so it was rifled really smooth. I can't recomend them highly enough. And the price was good too.

i left out the last rifle I put together two years ago,  A 338/06 on  VZ24 Mauser Action with a medium heavy Shaw barrel in a Hogue Stock with a full length Aluminum bedding block, this is the only rifle listed not glass bedded.

This rifle also shoots  in the .6 of an inch range at 100 Yds for 3 shots.  So I don't see the need to glass bed if you use a full length machined aluminum bedding block.

Anyone else tried not glass bedding stocks with the full length aluminum bedding block in place?  If so what were the results from an accuracy standpoint?

I rebarreled a Savage 12fv with a Shaw 26" 1in12 varmint weight 220Swift. It shoots 60gr V-Max sub-moa at 100yds and minute of prairie dog out past 400yds on a quiet day. When the need arises I will certainly use another.

It is a Marlin XL-7 originally a .270 win but now sports a Shaw Mag contour barrel in 35 Whelen with a 1-14 twist 24 inches long. With a Boyd's Thumb Hole stock in pepper that has had pillars installed and the action bedded to the stock. The action was squared and the lugs lapped as well as the feed ramp smoothed.

Just a couple of updates. Just today before Dangerous Dan boxed it up to send to me. . These 3 and 5 shot ragged hole groups at 100 yards is not too shabby. Sorry about all of the extra holes but with all of the snow he had in Utah it was too hard to go down and change out targets lol. They are getting some darn snow still.

About 20 years ago I wanted to build a specialty gun for carrying down on the coast of Alaska.  No scope to fog, I wanted peep sites.  Fiberglass stock, and a short barrel to get through the brush well, and Parkerized.  I sent my Mauser action to Shaw, I had seen their advertisement in Shotgun News.  I told them I wanted a .35 Whelen with an 18" barrel.  The finished product was just what I wanted.  I have shot it now off and on for 20 years and really like the gun.  Granted it's not a long range shooter, but out to 250 yards, it's great.  Without a scope I can't see farther than that.

Only one problem.  My son took it to the range one day about five years ago, and let his mother shoot it.  It now has a youth stock on it, and resides in her gun vault.  She won't let me have it back.    Her response:"I am your best hunting partner, I like it, I'm keeping it, Get over it".

But most important, I built this gun specifically for Bear Protection.  About five years after I built it, I used it to kill a charging Grizzly.  The gun and cartridge performed superbly, and I don't bad mouth Remington Core-lokt bullets either.

Well for my Marlin XL=7 in 35 Whelen I loaded up some Test rounds with the Speer 250Gr SP Hot-Core and TAC powder and will give them a try. I think they will work fine on HOG and Deer or anything else if I get the chance.

My .416 Rem Mag was built on a P-14 action and sports a Shaw barrel. All I have for Shaw barrels is praise!!!! Take care and God bless....cordell

My commercial Mauser action was fitted with a 257 Rob tube and is now part of the next lot scheduled for blueing at Shaw.  I chose them also based on all of the positive feedback here, and they finished ahead of their comitted date.  i don't expect anything but the same great performance when I get it to the range.

I Have been wanting a E R SHAW rifle for years now, The price is pretty good considering the alternatives, the only thing I can't do is have the patience enough to order one and wait 18 weeks to get it.  keeping that money tied up that long is difficult for me, when I could of bought something I can get and use right now.
So I buy the right now kind of guns and still don't have a E.R.Shaw custom Rifle.
Just keep saying, One of these days.
If their back log ever gets to a 1 month wait time.

No promises but their work order for my rebarrel said 16-20 weeks and when I got the call that my gun was getting packaged up, it was only half-way through that lead time.  I think they commit conservatively so they maintain a "do what you say you'll do or better" reputation.  Besides, your money isn't tied up.  You pay them when the gun is ready (and it's worth it if you are one who wishes to have a gun with some personal touches and at least the same, and very likely better, precision than the box gun.  Just my $.02
I just received my 257 roberts barelled action and I can concurr with the OP's comments on their fine workmanship.
