reamer question
« on: May 20, 2011, 01:09:12 PM »
ok, I just got done reaming out my 45 colt to 454 and it got to wondering, can you ream the 45 colt out to a 410 or could you shoot the 454 in a gun already chambered 45/410?

It's been talked about before and I think the general concensus was that it's not a good idea (or safe) to shoot the 454 in one of the 45/410 barrels. I think (could be wrong) that the 45/410 barrels are made of a milder steel like the shotgun barrels and the 45 LC barrel is the same steel as the other rifle barrels.
Get ahold of Gendoc... he loves them 45/410 barrels and whips up some dandy loads for 'em.  ;)

SM,

A 410 bore is .41" and the 45LC is .452 so you would have to deal with the pilot diameter issue on the reamer if you want to ream a 45LC to 410.  If you do it then and want to load 410 plastic/brass hulls about the biggest diameter bullet you can put in the 410 hull is about .41" unless you neck size the hull.  So it would seem that it would not work well shooting 410 slugs in a 45LC barrel reamed to 410. You could shoot 410 shot shells but you have the rifling induced rotation of  your shot cup to deal with.

I believe Spanky is spot on with the weaker barrel for the 45LC/410.   So a 460 S&W is a  hotter cartridge than the 454 Cas so the you would increase your chances of a "OOPS" if you chamber a 45LC/410 to 460 S&W.

.410 hulls are about .455" on the body, and about .473" on the brass, well at least the ones I have on my desk in front of me measure that..  Winchester Super X 2-1/2" Buckshot.   The shot capsule is about .41".  Very similar to the external dimensions of .45Colt.

ok all good info, but im not asking correctly i think. the factory 45/410 is understandably weaker. the 45 colt that i reamed out was a cowboy classic.since a 410 has lower pressures, could a cc be reamed out to 410 and how would that particular gun hold up to a 460. if there is such a difference between the 45 and 410, then how does nef and all the other manufacturers do it without squeezing the colt bullet or making the slugs or shot capsules so sloppy? all this is really just a curiousity thing.

Morning,
The 410 works in a 45 barrel because as stated the shot capsule (Actual projectile)is smaller diameter...

A neat thing about shot charges, they really are not particular about the barrels diameter... case in point.  If you where to fire a 410 out of a 12 Ga barrel using a 410 chamber insert, you would still get very nice patterns.

SO, reaming the 45 Colt to 454 or to 460 has been done and works out pretty well. Personally as neat as the idea of the 460 is, its not useful to me as its a smaller, higher pressure heavier recoiling 45-70  ::) .....  But the 454 is a nice upgrade form the 45Colt and allows me to protect my expensive Model P Colts and copies from heavy 45 Colt loads...
