Handi value?
« on: May 01, 2011, 09:44:52 AM »
Found a used 30-06 handi ejector model. Wood butt and fore-end.  Don't think it's been shot very much, but has wear on the frame...looks like it rubbed up against something and has bad scratching.  Any idea what a good price should be on this gun?

Prices are different around the country.

Wood butt as in Pallet wood?  If so I agree with Dave29.

But if its a Ultra with a Laminated stock, I would go as high as 175/200. But no more...

I agree with all the above.  At the show I went to this past weekend, there was a used Handi .30-06 pallet wood in nice shape, like new condition, and they wanted 259.00 for it.  I could buy it new for that.  I have a nice .30-06 Handi and didn't need it so I didn't try to haggle.

The frame is at least half the cost of the rifle.  If it is beat up, you'll have a hard time getting your money out of it, if and when you want to sell it.  I'd let it fly by, or steal it.  Point up the defects and chew him down.  The frame could always be refinished.

I live in Northern VT. and yesterday I stopped at a local shop and they had a Handi in 30-30 Win. The serial number
started with NR and it was in rough condition. The wood stock was scrapped up and bluing was thin in a few places.
The price - $ 199. At first I just put it back on the shelf, but I have a set of syn. stocks that would fit, and the frame is
made late enough so I could send it in and have accy barrels fitted. A lot of difference in prices thats for sure.

Thanks for the info guys.  I think he wants $195 for it, but I'll probably let it slide.

Prices vary in my area, but my local shop sells used Handis for $165 out the door. Sometimes they have 3, most times they have none. Condition, caliber, sights, scope bases, and scopes don't affect this price for some reason. I bought a 30-06 recently and passed on a .308 and 270. The 30-06 had a base and Warne rings. The .308 had no base. And the .270 had a Bushnell scope on it. All $165 cash apiece.

Last show I went to had what appeared to be an unfired 30-30 Topper with a 20 gauge barrel. $239. Passed on that, though it was a nice deal on a hard to find combo.

I have an unfired 30-06 combo. Was at Gander Mountain one day looking at new guns. Asked about the satin frame/blue barrel 30-06. A little weird. Might have been $179 or $199, was not over $200 for sure. They bought out the box and it was a combo with a 20 gauge barrel in it.

Not so long ago, Dick's was selling a new .308 with a camo stock, and a cheap scope for $229. Never bothered buying one.

I think with the way the economy is going and the way businesses have been on shaky ground, and the way H&R has changed hands of late there's always that chance that Handi's could some day cease to be manufactured, and since they are pretty much bomb proof even a few cosmetic blemishes could be overlooked when the demand outweighs the supply.

It would be a while before anyone would have to worry should they stop making them, and as long as Tim still has his collection we are pretty safe!
My culled down Handi's are the 45-70, and then I have a few others to keep it company...357 Mag/Max. .45 LC/.454 Casull Carbine, .243 Ultra, and 20 gauge Tracker II.
