Torx or Hex Action Screws
« on: May 17, 2011, 06:32:13 AM »

Ive slowly been learning the value of uniform and consistent torque on action screws.  Ive got 3-Sako's that I'd like to convert from flat-head style screws to either hex or torx type screws.

Ive been internet searching with "0" success.  Anyone know where I can purchase either of these screw types (prefer torx)?

Thanks

Check Brownells under screws and gunsmith tools & supplies.
If not Fastenal supply should be able to get you some.

Hooker and Chromie....appreciate your help.  Brownells didn't carry what I was looking for and when I tried  Fastenal Supply my computer crashed and I never got to their website.

However...the Jnp site looks like a "goldmine" for Sako screws.  They have what I need for two of my rifles, and I have sent them an e-mail inquiring about screws for two older Sako Actions...a L61R and a AII.  Guess while Im at it I would like to convert all of them and be done with it.

I'll post back when I hear from them about screws for the older Sako actions, just in case anyone else is looking for the same.

Cheers!

Silvertip- if you are a member on Rimfire Central, SakoPete is an avid member there, and is the "P"in J&P, a pm to him directly may help as well.

Thanks Chromie for helping me locate a source for Sako Screws.  If anyone is interested here is a short report on my experience.

Just to report back, I ordered 4 sets of Sako Action Screws from J & P Custom Products.  I communicated with "Pete" and have to say these folks came through big time.

I measured the screws that came with my rifles and the dimensions were not spot on with dimensions for those available at J&P.  I sent my measurements to Pete to see if he thought they would be "close enough" to work.  Pete's reply was "no problem, we will make them to your exact measurements / specification".  So, J & P  provided a service of building custom screws...at least for those rifles that they service.

Turn-a-round time from my order to receipt of the custom made action screws was very quick, appx 1 week.  Ive installed 3-sets so far. Their product is well made and the blue quality is right up there with my old Finnbear L61 R in .264 Mag.  The hex heads are so much easier to tighten, loosen and torque than the old style flat-head screws.  I think I will eventually convert most of my rifles.

It was a pleasure to buy a quality product from a company that was so helpful.

Silvertp,

Thanks for the information, glad to see that you went with the Hex screws,   I hate the Torx screws, the wrench for them will actually cut you if it slips out of control, dislike sharp edges on anything but cutting tools.
