.357 Rem Max QuickLOAD help please
« on: February 27, 2011, 03:15:46 PM »

Wondering if someone with QuickLOAD would make a few calculations for me PLEASE

Goal; Achieve approx 2000 fps with .357 Rem Maximum.

Components:
                    Remington .357 Rem Max cases
                    Remington small rifle primers
                    Hogdon H110 powder
180 gr hard cast gas checked boolits
                    22 inch barrel

Looking for powder weight to achieve this goal, and the pressures in psi, that the load will generate.

Thanks.

QuickLoad doesn't work very well with straight walled chamberings, specially the 357Max, I've done lots of work with it trying to duplicate factory pressures, doesn't come close. I'm sure some of the H&R and TC guys will chime in with some recommendations, lots of Maxi load recommendations in the H&R forum here, Hodgdon has Maxi data for 180gr jacketed data the should work fine.  Steve worked with H110 in his article on the Maxi.

Thanks for the reply Tim.
Wondering why QuiclLOAD does not work well for straight -walled cartridges? Was thinking of buying it........

Anyway, I have researched Rem Max loads, pressures, CIP, CUP, PSI, PMax, etc, on the net for months now.......... and I have STILL to find a definitive site that has published or listed the pressures for it`s stated loads. The powder manufacturers don`t publish the pressures, and neither does the Lyman manual that I have.....Grrrrr.

At best, I have only been able to piece together bits of pressure info from here and there on the various sites I have visited. I understand that there are MANY variables that complicate an effort to produce accurate baseline pressures. Revolvers and their long forcing cone type throats produce a very different pressure than does a carbine chamber with a tight, short leade. Much of the .357 Max info and data stems from testing with revolvers, not unexpectedly......

There are literally hundreds of threads that abound, with guys providing .357 max loading data, with powder weights, primer, bullet and case choice info, but few provide an actual measured velocity, and fewer yet, if any provide measured pressure ratings. Thus my request for the QuickLOAD data..........  Obviously, I do not want to stress my Uberti to the upper limit, and nor do I want to be on the verge of squib loads. I`m essentially wanting to know, where in the pressure range, as in psi,  of the .357 Rem max, does a 180 gr 2000fps in 22 inch barrel load lie? Top 10 percent of the permissable pressure? 75 percent of the top pressure? You get the idea.

I have H110 and Lil`gun powder, that`s it. Can`t buy AA 1680 here in Canada.......nobody sells it. Might be able to get some IMR 4227, haven`t tried yet. Figuring on using what I have on hand.

Here are some more links with .357 Max data. For 180 gr bullets and H110 pwder, the powder weights range from a starting weight of 15.0 gr and go as high as 24.5 gr, lol.  ::)

Scroll down to the Contender Carbine article by Hobie. Be aware that H110/W296 may not be the best powder to work with, see the warning on Hodgdon's reloading page.

Just shot my first cast loads in the maxi.  Using a Ranch Dog mold 190 gr GC, I got the best group so far out of 20.5 grs. Lil Gun.  Two touching at 50yds.  Worked up from 19.5 grs in .5 increments.  Haven't tried 296/H110 in the maxi at all.  I have had better luck with AA1680 in jacketed.

Hope this might help, even though I have no velocity or pressure data.  Just want it to hit where I hold.

Thanks for the input Bobby, I appreciate it.

I`m going to load up some Lil`gun too I suppose, and see how they fly. I just bought a chrony, so that`ll help with the load-finding process alot.
Been reading some threads about Lil`gun doing strange pressure spikes when used at higher end psi loadings...... So with that in mind, I may well keep the Lil`gun loads at a moderate level, however many grains that might be........

www.handloads.com has .357 Maximum loads for both handgun and rifle. You really should try IMR 4227 for what you want to do with this cartridge. It's a lot less temperature sensitive. There are three distinct load levels for this cartridge. The most often found is for the Ruger SRM Blackhawk that generally maxxed out at 45-46 kpsi. The newest SAAMI spec loads max out at 40 kpsi. (yawn) The original .357 Maximum loads maxxed out at 48-51 kpsi and were used in the Dan Wesson SuperMag, Seville single action and original Contender loads.
