Clamp-on barrel mount for a bipod?
« on: May 31, 2011, 05:23:35 PM »
Has anyone used a Leapers UTG Tri-Rail Universal Barrel Mount for a bipod? It clamps to a barrel and has a weaver rail. Would this affect accuracy? Thanks.

IMHO - It will affect accuracy. I am not saying that it can not be accurate, but it will affect it. Chances are the load you developed will not be as accurate, but stranger things have happened. It may be just as accurate after you work with loads and tuning the bi-pod location. You definitely will need to change your zero, the pressure under the barrel will make it shoot higher. You will need to take care what you set the bi-pod on. Soft surfaces work best. It sounds like you could "tune" your load a little by moving the bi-pod up and down the rail. It sounds like a lot of work. If you mount your bi-pod to the fore end; conventionally. I think you will have much less change in both your zero and your accuracy. I fully bed the fore end, that way it shoots the same if I am holding it in my hand, on sand bags or with a bi-pod. The pressure point is the same.

The pictures below were all shot at different times with different loads at 100 yards. They were shot off of sand bags under the fore end.

It makes for a very consistent shoot to shoot set up. I can get the same zero if I stand and hold in my hand or off a bi-pod that is on the ground. Remember, I am not saying that a bi-pod off the barrel will not work, but why? There will be a lot of work developing loads and once you do, you will have to shoot it that way all the time.

Good Luck and Good Shooting
