Has anyone reloaded any?
« on: May 26, 2011, 03:22:58 AM »
Has anyone reloaded any of the new 45ACP brass with the small primer pockets?
You would want to keep it separate from the standard large pocket 45ACP brass.
But I have read some guys are just throwing this stuff away when they come across any of it.
It would seem this would be serviceable if precautions were used.
And I know the powder used would play a large factor in the following. But would in general, a small magnum pistol primer be a better choice in reloading this stuff.

I have a few, but haven't reloaded them yet, not enough for a run. All the articles I've read report very little difference in performance/accuracy when the .45 ACP is loaded with small pistol primers. In Handloader mag., the tested differences were less than 25 fps. velocity drop when using small primers with identical loads as large primer reloads, and no noticable diff. in accuracy/functioning. No need for a magnum primer...

Thanks I must have missed that in handloader. I have not ran into any my self. But read several post on forms, were the guys were just pitching the small primer stuff.
I must be cheap I hate to see good components go to waste.

I'm the same way Hornady. I've kept them seperate, and when I get a couple hundred, I'll prime them with the hand primer, then run them thru the Dillion with the same load as for the lg. primers. gypsyman

I've loaded a bunch with sp primers and my regular load, without any problems. They shoot just as well as the ones with the lp pocket.

I did not know about the SP vs LP until I read this I have 6- 3lb coffee cans full of 45 brass just happen to know which one was PU in the last couple years or so what a PIA it would have been to go thru 4-5K rounds of brass, instead it was 1 can and I only found a hand full most was blaser and federal brass and it made it easy as they were  brass colored primers.
Remember it's where the first bullet goes out of a cold barrel that counts most.

The small primer and large primer "brissance" is the same. Even small rifle primers are the same. The difference in the rifle primers in the thickness of the cup.
The small pistol magnum primers a quite a bit hotter.
Unless you have a very accurate, very expensive .45, you will NOT notice any difference on target.
However, your progressive press will attempt to cram the large primer in the small primer pocket and you will have problems.
