Manufacturers of .40 cal?
« on: June 23, 2011, 12:07:53 AM »
The hunting law here is .40 and under for small game and .40 and above for deer. My plan would be balls or sabots for small game and bullets for deer. I've been using a double shotgun for years. The single ball just isn't very accurate without sights from an old non choked shotgun. Buckshot is illegal or I would just go buck and ball. Quite a while ago I saw some crazy looking under hammer type muzzleloaders, but that's all I could dig up in .40.
Thanks

Green Mountain makes some .40 barrels for the T/C Hawken.

Dixie Gun Works has their Deluxe Cub rifle in .40 caliber.  It is made by Pedersoli.

That's the only factory built .40 of which I'm aware and it is a nice light little rifle. The Green Mountain "drop ins" are a good option for roundballs but they are not for conicals, the grooves are too deep and the twist is marginal for anything but a ball. How the Dixie Cub would shoot conicals I don't know, they have shallower grooves than the Green Mountain but the same 48" twist. For that matter, I don't know where you'd get a conical bullet in .40 caliber. I do believe a .390" ball over 50-60 grains of 3f will do nicely for deer within 50 yards with careful shot placement which is pretty much manditory with what ever one shoots.

I just assumed there were molds in maxi or mini. I was hoping for the extra weight of a bullet to give me 100 yards or so.

In other sizes, yes, in .40 caliber I don't know of any. T/C used to offer molds for their maxi-balls in .32, .36, .45, .50 & .54 but only round balls in .40 caliber. I also don't believe any available .40 caliber barrel would be suited to conical bullets. It's almost impossible to get a conical bullet started straight unless it is sized to an easy sliding fit atop the lands. It depends on the kick of the powder charge to upset the bullet to fill the grooves. Barrels for conical bullets need rather shallow grooves, .004" to .005" deep for best results whereas roundball barrels generally have deeper grooves of .008-.014" deep. Barrels strictly for conicals will also have a faster twist as needed to stabilize an elongated bullet. A 48" twist is fine for .40 caliber balls but would not stabilize a long bullet. If you could find a mold, the bullet, to stabilize in the 48" twist, would have to be so short as to offer no advantage over the ball.
The problem is there is just not much demand for .40 caliber. It is popular with some offhand competition shooters as a light recoil flat shooting rifle but hunters seem to find it "betwixt and between", too small for big game and too big for small game, they want .32's or .36's for squirrel rifles and .45 or larger for deer.

Okay, thanks guys. I guess I will look for two used rifles instead of a new one. I was trying to set it up where I could just ramble through the woods and have a legal caliber for what ever I ran into. Or load light or heavy if I was set on hunting something in particular that day. I guess I'll just start a couple of threads later on for you guys to help me settle on some rifles. But in the meantime I have a lot of searching to do to learn about them.
Many thanks

You're fortunate, in that your state's laws allow a .40 for both small game & deer.

I HAVE to use two different bores, since my state specifies .40 & under for small game / .45 & above for deer.
