Worst Case of Official Overreaction
« on: May 01, 2011, 03:56:00 PM »
Something went down on our street maybe 4 or 5 years ago that's still got me shaking my head.  Thankfully, no one was arrested or killed.  A neighbor lady fell down in her house and dislocated her shoulder.  Her husband was in Iraq but her best friend was there and she called the ambulance.  First vehicle on the scene was a full sized fire engine which sat there with lights flashing and engine running for at least half an hour.  The ambulance arrived and the team went in the house and did their thing.  Next a very tricked out Chevy Suburban pulled up, the EMS Supervisor, who probably had enough comm gear on board to make the military envious.  Then came a police car, followed soon by another police car marked "supervisor".  So now we've got five emergency vehicles on our cul-de-sac, lighting up the sky with red and blue and making enough fumes for an air quality alert.  You would have thought the Manson Family was in town.

A bunch of us were out on the street and we got to talking.  Someone said they always roll a fire truck to keep the crew sharp, and because they might have some equipment on board that the ambulance guys decide they need.  EMS supervisor was there to make sure everything was done right, to protect the county from a lawsuit.  The cop got called in case it was really a domestic violence situation, and again, this takes a supervisor to make sure the case is handled properly.  In other words, the lawyers did it.  Now, this is an affluent suburb of Washington DC, in fact one of the richest counties in America.  That's right, this is where they drag your tax dollars.  That doesn't stop them from sticking us up for thousands in real estate taxes and then bellyaching about how we're neglecting the schools.  I just wonder, does anyone else live in a place that flushes money down the toilet this fast?

Even the good guys gotta cover their @sses in 21st century Amerika.  I got no problem with that.

My question is whether half the people you mention should even have jobs at the taxpayer's expense.

 ???
They may talk of a "New Order" in the  world, but what they have in mind is only a revival of the oldest and worst tyranny.   No liberty, no religion, no hope.   It is an unholy alliance of power and pelf to dominate and to enslave the human race.

I am not defending this, but the fire/rescue service in your area may have a tiered response system where they roll the fire engine that was probably staffed with basic life support providers because it could get there and render aid fastest. The suburban may have also been staffed as a "quick response vehicle" and had one paramedic  advanced life support provider on board in case the sitiuation required paramedic intervention. The ambulance which is staffed with two people and usually staffed with at least one paramedic is usually the busiest unit in a EMS system and may not always be immediatley available depending on the size and population of the area served. As for the police showing up too? Well I cant really answer that one. In most of the systems I have worked in the police were way too busy to show up on every call and we usually had to wait a safe distance from the call for them to get there if it was a violent call.  If you look up tiered response systems it would probably be explained muh more clearly than I have explained it.
Hi NSA! Can you see how many fingers I am holding up?

Thanks for the info.  It must sound silly to be crabbing about what amounts to top notch service.  Our responders are great, and I think they all arrived within about 10 minutes of each other that night.  Maybe it was a slow night, but more likely, we are fully staffed here.  Sometimes it seems like half the cars on the road are government vehicles of some kind.  I'm sure there are parts of the country where people would like more police and fire.

There is a lot of concern about local taxes, which are approaching the level of Federal.  A few years back the proposal to build a new governmental complex caused some controversy.  Sure, these big counties with large populations and budgets need a lot of office space, but the plans seemed a little heavy on the marble and mahogany.  No one would defend it, but they went ahead and built it anyway.  We've got states going bankrupt these days, and the countries day of reckoning may not be far off.  Seems like we have to start re-thinking our priorities.

Seattle has been known to flush money. bill gates had a big woop de doo at his house on the east side of lake washington a few years back, other $$$$$$$$$$aires, mayors, etc, etc. Not in Seattle city limits, but they had a seattle city fire dept Fire Boat Patrolling the waters of the lake, back and forth, for the duration of the party. Gotta wonder how much that cost ? I'm sure there are alot of instances in alot of places.
