my buddy did penetration tests on all the aplicable 223 deer bullets and found that the barnes didnt open reliably. He said he hasnt seen that problem in any other caliber with the tsx bullets but just didnt get reliable enough expansion with the 223. He did shoot a couple deer with them and said that he didnt see real good tissue damage with them either. He recomended to me to use the partition and ive shot a number of deer with it and all were quick clean kills.

I've used both the 62 and 70 grain TSX bullets (not the tipped TSXs) out of a 1:7 twist barrel on several deer.  Both have worked very well.  They have left fairly big wound channels and all have been pass through shots.

Barnes bullets will not expand when shot into things like wet newspaper or other home style "test" media.  They are designed to expand after impacting animal tissue.  I've used the same bullets on groundhogs and they seem fully expanded before exiting since they darn near tear the groundhogs in half sometimes.  Barnes claims that the TSX bullets are fully expanded after only 2" or so of penetration and the results of groundhog shooting seems to back that up.

I would note that the Barnes website calls for a 1:8 twist for the 62 grain tipped TSX and a 1:9 twist for the 62 grain TSX.  You might want to call them at 800-574-9200 and see what they have to say.

Since stability problems may not show up for a considerable distance downrange I'd recommend shooting them at the longest distance you expect to hunt.  I've seen bullets near the edge of the stability envelope group fine at 50 or 100 yards and then do some goofy things.

If the Barnes bullets don't shoot as well as you like I, like Lloyd,  would recommend the Partition.  They would have been the next thing I would have tried if the Barnes TSXs didn't work.

dont know lance. tsx bullets in every other caliber do just fine in penetration testing. why would hide open them up and not wet print?

Lloyd, I sure can't answer that but on the Barnes website is (was?) a bit of info about why the TSX didn't perform in some non standard test media.  I'm sure a call to them would answer that question.  The guy I've talked to when doing research is Ty.

Several years back I tried them in 53gr.(I think thats what they were).I purposly shot a small buck through  the shoulders at about 25 yards to see how they would do(not a shot I normaly take with a 223) it blew through the shoulders and the deer didn't take a step. That was the only animal I took with them, but it seemed to work.I believe I used BLC powder to load them.
XLI the one to go with.
