I have a shorty 30-06 and you need to wear ear plugs and muffs if you shoot it at a covered bench. Also, helps if you are at the range by yourself. An occassional shot or two hunting with a high pressure bottle neck case probably wouldn't be as bad but you still might want to wear something like the Walker Game ears to save your hearing.
