Bullet Seating?
« on: June 11, 2011, 07:10:26 PM »
Hello, everyone.  I just started loading black again after a nearly 20 year hiatus.  When I forsook the black, and went to smokeless, with cast, I usually seated so front band was engraved by rifling leade.  With black, I think I need some room in there for fouling, so am seating so front band edge just touches leade.  What do you guys think?  Thanks!

Depends on the action type, but usually I set the seating depth with a clean barrel in the shop if using fixed ammunition. I make it up so I can just thumb press the loaded round into the chamber. After firing, the fouling builds up and I can't seat the round. So I use the blow tube to soften the fouling and the next round will slide right into place.

On my Vetterli, I do have the bullet engraving the lands when the bolt closes. Same deal, have to blow tube between shots then it closes easily.

On the Trapdoor I just load it to normal mil spec, use bullets with undersize noses to deal with the fouling, and it works just like it was designed to. That one I can shoot a lot without having to blowtube. It's almost like those old time guys knew what they were doing when they designed that rifle!
