16 3/4" 30-06 Truck Gun
« on: June 05, 2011, 06:35:36 PM »
I picked up a stock 30-06, with a 22" barrel and a pallet wood stock set for $125 about a month ago.....couldnt pass it up.

Anyways I hacksawed the barrel off and took it down to my buddies machine shop and he recrowned it for me, probably one of the best looking crowns I have on any of my rifles, including 2 100% custom long range rigs.  We also drilled and tapped the barrel for a scout scope set up.  Switched the stocks over and mounted a 2x pistol scope on it.

We went over to an indoor range after the work was done and put a couple rounds of Hornady Superformance. All I can say is wow, we each shot 1 round because there were paying customers there shooting....the blast was amazing, after the second round one of the shooters came over to the bay we were in to see what they heck we were shooting.

I got out today and shot some of my M1 garand reloads through it.....I think its a keeper

5 shots 50 yards with 150gr FMJ's

Please post results when you get a chance to run it over a chronograph!

That'll make a nice pak or mountain gun, and would work nicely as a brush gun also.

Good job!
My culled down Handi's are the 45-70, and then I have a few others to keep it company...357 Mag/Max. .45 LC/.454 Casull Carbine, .243 Ultra, and 20 gauge Tracker II.

17,

Very Nice '06 Shorty!  My Handi '06 is 18.5" and I wouldn't dream of shooting at an indoor range because of the MZ blast.  Did the folks in the lane next to you have blood running out of their ears? :o

I can imagine the blast is pretty awesome, I have a 30'06 Handi and I have had several comments on the muzzle blast from the 22" tube.

 8) Make sure you pack your tinted safety glasses and keep all stray hair in place to keep from getting any singed!! ;D

You're going to enjoy the short Handi.  My two truck guns are my 16.5 inch Maxi and my 18 inch .38.55.  I don't think I'll ever chop my '06, but  I think I will do the .445 to 18 incyhes.

.......the sling and the pouch on the buttstock.  Where did ya get thoes?

I made the sling out of Paracord, there is about 200 feet of cord in it total. There is a CKRT "M16" folding knife, a fire striker, a mini maglight, zipties, and carabiners, also there are a couple key rings all woven into the sling.

I picked the buttstock pouch up in my travels acrossed Wyoming for work.  There is a gun shop in Rawlins Wyoming that keeps them in stock, I think it was about $15....next time I am over there I am going to get a couple more, they are pretty handy, in the pounch I have a small mulit tool...the idea for this rifle is an "always gun"....always have it with me with enough stuff to kill and clean big game and build a fire to cook it.

I am thinking I will probably stuff the butt stock with some other stuff for fire building, cotton balls and vasaline in a zip lock bag....maybe some fishing line and a couple hooks and several packages of ear plugs.

100 rounds 0f 30-06 fits nicely in a couple Hornady bullet boxes and fit under the seat of my truck.

You've put alot of thought and effort into this setup!  In a pinch you could unravel the sling and use the para cord for emergency situations.  I bet it is a comfortable sling too.

If you find out who makes the pouch let me know.  I'd like to have one.  I'm sure others might like to know too... 8)

I have but I'm short on time lately.... working 12 hour days 6 days a week really cuts down on free time.  I'm not all that sure how to offer them either, if I bought the extras they wouldn't be cheap but if I did bare slings I could make them fairly reasonable.

I find these full-caliber, short barrels a bear to shoot - at least after the first shot!  My son had a 20" barrel Mosin Nagant M38 that was a handfull with full-power ammo.  I had a Winchester model 94 16" in 30-30 that was also a bit much.

That is a great looking setup, I make my own para cord slings as well and have them on all my guns. Very "Handi" but they do take a long time to make.

I completely agree!!!  I have a 20" 8MM Mauser that tolerable. But I also have two Marlin Marauders one 30-30 and one 35 Rem, 16" barrels and they ate not fun with our hearing protection!!!!

I LOVE the pistol calibers with short barrels, but the rifle stuff, that isn't really for me! Very "handi" but too much noise and blast!

What scope mount (base) is that?  I made a scout setup on a .30-06 Handi about 10 years ago, all I could find to fit was the Burris for the model 700 Remington.  It worked out well enough, but what is that you have there?

I used the NEF scope mount that came on the rifle...we drilled and tapped the barrel for the factory screws than bedded the scope mount with gap filling loc tight.. seems to be very solid.  This weekend we put 70 round s through it out to 400 yards and it did great. The muzzle blast is great and it makes a heck of flash right before dark.
