Faux KS
« on: June 11, 2011, 03:36:18 PM »
A forum member sold me a new long acton take-off Remington KS stock and it came today. I put my 24" ADL .30-06 barreled action in it. The barrel channel had to be opend up just a tad. I matched painted the barrel channel to seal it. You can't even see were the material was removed. This rifle has a 1st Gen. X-Mark pro trigger which I adjusted down to 2lbs and it's seems much better. I applied a healthy coat of Kiwi Neutral to the metal and bedded it with J-B Weld. I had a nice alloy triggerguard I used to reassemble it. Tomorrow I'll mount the 3-9X40 Conquest on it using Talley LW lows.

The Kiwi worked great as a release agent.  I touched up the bedding, put it all back together, put the Talleys on, and installed the 3-9X40 Conquest.

Nice job!  I wonder if stockey's has one of those for my CDL.  Also, can you describe how you use the jb weld to bed?  Which one do you use and where do you put it?

Thanks Swamp

Stocky's has the Bell & Carlson Alaskan Ti, and Alaskan II stocks (currently used by Remington) which are excellent.  The J-B Weld is sold in stores like Lowe's and Walmart.  A small amount behind the recoil lug and just forward of the recoil lug where the receiver lays is all that is needed.  I prefer the 24 hour cure but they make a 1 hour cure.  Coat the metal that will contact the J-B Weld with Kiwi Neutral Shoe Polish and the barreled action will come right out.

Swampman...I'm liking what you did with your Remy.  Dang nice rifle for the swamp (or anywhere else).

Question...Do you know if the Ak Titanium or Ak II stocks have alum bedding blocks?

They do have bedding blocks.  Here's the scope and mounts.

I wouldn't think so.  I like the Alaskan Ti in olive with black splatter.

Dr Doug... FWIW Ive been doing a lot of research on "bedding" in addition to the aluminum bedding blocks included in many rifle stocks.

What I have learned is that about 1/2 the folks also do a "skim bedding", which is just a thin layer of bedding material on the bedding block contacts.  The claim is that bedding will take care of any imperfections in either the bedding block or the rifle's bedding sites.

I for one just got a H&S stock w/ alum bedding and am surprised at the gouges in the alum blocks, so intend to throw some acra-glass on top to get 100% contact.

The aluminum pillars or aluminum chassis blocks  only help with getting an accurate torque setting on the action screws.
Due to the relief in the action screw holes in the stock and imperfections in the bedding you can still unrepeatable placement of the barreled action with in the stock. It may not seem like much but it does make a difference.
Bedding with the aluminum insures consistent placement of the action with in the stock and accurate torque settings. I have found this to make measurable differences that are sometimes amazing.

Swampman the rifle looks great ,but then it is a Remington. ;)

Thanks Guys!  I'm not opposed to a skim coat of bedding material in the least.  Easy enough to do.  I'm sold....skim it is!

I installed  a Mauser 338/06 in a Hogue stock with the full length aluminum bedding block, it shot groups in the .6 tenths inch range at 100 yards so I didn't bother to glas bed it.    If I work on any more full length bedding block stocks I will skim bed it the length of the action and for the first two inches of the barrel in front of the receiver.

Another release agent that works is paste floor wax, but I still perfer Brownells release agent brushed on with at least two coats before installing the glas bedding material.

At the least  Swampman did admit that factory stocks need a little help in the bedding area with his post.

I do like his Talley scope base/ring combo's on the Remington, I have put a set on an Enfield P14 Action for a big boomer, but modified to use 8-40 mounting screws vs 6-48 screws.   This is as strong and streamlined with full loading port access that you can get.   I like the ability to single load in a pinch and one piece scope mounts get in the way.

I doubt this rifle will shoot as well as it did before I bedded it.  Model 700s really don't need the kind of bedding other rifles do.  A dab behind the recoil lug and a 1/2" under the reciever is plenty.  Also consider a stock is worth quite a bit less after it's been bedded.  I buy and sell them constantly and it's very tough to sell a bedded stock.
