educate me please on frames
« on: June 14, 2011, 05:54:23 PM »
A long time ago, I owned a couple of contenders and various barrels for NRA hunter/pistol and hunting and just general fooling around. I had two frames back then.......both puma frames with different styles of firing pin selectors. The triggers were very nice and light on these older frames and they had adjustments for both over-travel and pull weight and could be dialed down purty light. Those days and frames are long gone but i am wanting back into the game. How does the G2 frames compare in the area of trigger pull and adjustment compared to the old frames?

looking on the T/C site, they do not mention if the G2 trigger is adjustable and state the trigger pull will fall in a range of 2.75 to 4 pounds...........don't really care for a heavy trigger or over-travel and wondering if some serious smithing would be involved or if i would be better off looking for an older frame.

The older frames say below 195,000 are harder to open and trigger is a bit harder to set.
In the frames with the selector on top of the hammer are both adjustable in travel and over travel.
The triggers are flat faced and grooved.

The G2 triggers are smooth faced and do not have the adjustment screws for the trigger. They must have a lighter hammer spring and trigger job (2 surface areas polished) in order to have the G2 trigger be as crisp at the older frames.

Hi Deputy!
The trigger pulls on the G2 can be as good as the old Contenders, maybe even better by just replacing the sear return spring with a lighter one.  You can also tweak the factory spring a little and get the trigger pull down to about 1.5 - 2 lbs.  Cost is "free" up to about $8.00 if you do it your self.

Also, the G2's no longer come with a trigger overtravel screw, but the trigger guard still has the rectangular "flat" to drill and tap if you want one.  I did both of mine with a #6 tap and set screw that you can get from the hardware store.  I like the #6 size better than the tiny #4 size set screws that came from the factory.

The last trick you can do, if you are inclined to do the work your self is to install a heavier hammer spring.  I installed a 52lb spring in mine, which helps to make the trigger pull much crisper and helps with accuracy and consistency.

The total cost of all this (if you do the work yourself) is about $35.00 including the price of the drill bit and thread tap!  I did the trigger work on both of my G2's for about $50.00.

Of course you can pay a gunsmith $100.00 or so to do it for you......
