Good to be back
« on: June 15, 2011, 01:30:41 AM »
Well It sure is good to be back.Tried to die on you guys last week.Had a blood clot go from my leg through my heart and into my lungs.Didn't even know I had the clot.Found out i have a strange gene that causes clots with out to many symptoms.Called "factor V leiden".Causes extra clotting to occur.Have your blood checked for it.It's hereditary.Doesn't bother you until you get it your late forties on up.Life changing for me.I'm going to be on blood thinners now fore ever.Pretty dang scary.Never sick at all them BAM seven days in the hospital.Have to give myself a shot once a day for the next few days to get the caumadin(sp) levels up.I HATE NEEDLES!!!!

that's scary stuff, especially for an outdoorsman.  you have to be very careful around knives.

Slowhanddd,

Welcome to the club?!?! :(  I had the exact same experience 3 1/2 years ago except maybe I ignored it longer than you did as I now am now hooked up to Oxygen 24/7. :P  Keep a good eye on yourself right now, IMHO you should have been kept in the hospital until your PT/INR was high enough, that is you should be an inpatient while  you are still getting the shoots.  They tried to send me home early but my RN wife would not let them.   I hope they found your problem soon enough that your lungs are not compromised, that is the real downside of pulmomary emboli.  You should have your Oxygen Saturation checked frequently to make sure you have enough oxygen in your blood to prevent other health concerns.  Hoping you the best and that all goes well.

BB

Slowhanddd - Best wishes for your recovery. Don't be afraid of the coumadin. I've  been on it a long time now with my heart and respirtory history and I'm doing just fine with it. You'll have to exercise a litlle extra care about cuts and the llike but nothing you can't handle. Get well soon!

Hang in there, I've been off cigarettes for going on 8 years now.  Gets easier with time (I smoked 2 pks a day for 23 years) Had a couple close calls and was having breathing trouble, nearly went on Oxygen at age 40.  I just got lucky and was able to quit before the blood clots and really severe lung issues hit.  Hope you can recover and regain your illusion of perfect health (like most of us we are mostly hiding our flaws)

They call them things "coffin nails" for a reason.Gave up on them when you could buy a pack of filters for 25 cents.
My problem is sugar, it caught up with me now. :(   Lucky for me I can control it with pills.

Welcome to the (cardiac)club!!

Sorry to read of the problems, SO glad you came out on top!!!

Blood clot for me too, docs couldn't concisely say where mine came frome, I had minor plack building around my heart but pretty clear everywhere else. No family history. I had a bad fall three weeks earlier??
Then one day, bam, heart attack. Scary stuff for sure. I was amazed what it took from me in strength. Almost three years for me and doing well. You will too if you listen to the docs, eat right and loose the damn cigarettes!! New diet was easy when put in same perspective as you have with cancer sticks, do it or die...

Keep us posted, we can offer support and advice. I found it immensely helpfull and supportive. GREAT bunch of people here!!!!

 Good luck,

CW

Slow,

Glad you're OK, stuff like this puts things into perspective. Thank you for the reminder, also. Both my father and one of my uncles have factor V Leiden. I'm 38 and need to get tested for it soon. I will also have my 3 kids tested for it next time they have physicals.

Slow, after a stint in my heart(can you say SURPRISE!?) 5 years ago , the wife got a clot in her lungs in 09. Scared the crap out of us. Now she's on cumadin daily , too. Just went today for the INR. Okay. It's a different way of life, but it's LIFE! Glad to have it!
Good luck and stay with it, the alternative sucks!
