5:30AM 38deg and raining
« on: June 16, 2011, 05:50:32 AM »
Well we have finally had enough rain to slow down the fires.  Cooler temperatures have also helped.  No longer smoky, nice clear air.

Sitting listening to the radio while the biscuits bake, seems folks down in Dutch Harbor are having trouble getting mail.  Pair of Eagles have a nest near the entrance to the Post Office.  They are attacking anyone in the area.  Residents trying to pick up mail have to run the gauntlet to get into the Post Office then to get out again.  One guy said he got talons in his scalp, he did not duck fast enough.

Was driving by Santa Land yesterday.  Big RV park next to Santa Clause House here in North Pole.  RV park normally is full, to overflowing this time of the year.  I saw one RV in the park.  Tourism is way down this year.  It's nice not to have to deal with Motor homes on my way into town.  But it is bad for the portion of the economy of the state that depends on tourism.  Many of the old time residents hate tourist.

Got a small Bull Moose out back in my swamp this morning.  He's enjoying the water plants.  22 Hours of sunshine, it's not getting dark at night.  Constant daylight, the new army troops are having trouble going to sleep with the sun shining.

Was talking to Al, the owner of the Fairbanks Tannery, he is taking in six to eight bears a day.  Bear Hunters are busy.

I'm going back to bed, it's too early to be getting up if not going hunting.  Nothing interesting in today's paper.  Yall have a nice morning, even if it's almost noon for ya.

Hunting bear this soon?  They haven't had time to fatten up on tourists yet.

Sourdough, your weather sounds very similar to ours in North Idaho - 41 degrees and raining.  Coldest and wettest Spring in many years.  Don't even have a garden in yet because of the soil temp.  At least we don't have the fires...yet.
Biscuits sounds good.
Thanks for the stump

It stopped raining about 10AM yesterday, and became partly cloudy with periods of sun.  Big clouds kept coming over and weeping just a little.  Turned into a nice day, temps got up into the high 60s.

At 3AM this morning the sun got into a position to reflect off one of the birches in the yard.  Reflection hit me right in the face as I was sleeping.  The wife had opened the window to let in fresh air.  Once that sunlight hit me in the face I was awake for the morning and could not get back to sleep.  At 4 I just got up and went outside for a while.  Walked back to the gravel pit across the pipeline.  Saw a pair to Swans and Canada Geese that are nesting there.  Did not see any young ones, just the old ones.  The Geese chased off a Red Fox while I was sitting there.   Mosquitoes are real bad this year, because of the rain.  Sat down inside the screen tent and fell asleep.  Slept till 9AM, did not even hear the wife leave at 7:20.

Sure would like to have some of that rain and I wouldn't mind just a little of the cooler temperatures either. We had a warm 107 yesterday afternoon with 20 mph winds. The humidity right now is 3%. I keep feed and water out for the birds and bunny rabbits and the water pan is really popular with them. There are some good things about this drouth though. We have NO bugs, no weeds, no grassburrs, I haven't had to mow anything and the swamp cooler works great. On the minus side are the fires. A bunch of NM and west TX has gone up in smoke this year. Some of it is still burning. I've spent my adult life here and never seen it go this long without any moisture or so many fires.
