I need some advice on what I should and can take on a commercial flight to a hiking destination.  The hikes will be day trips only.  I always drive and that affords me liberties that I wont be able to take on this trip.  Destination pacific northwest time frame mid august.   Any help appreciated.

You can't take any liquid fuel or a stove or lantern that they can smell fuel on. They must be perfectly clean, tank & all.  ;)

I'm guessing you are talking about defense against critters of all shapes and sizes since you are talking day trips into the back country.  I think you will be reduced to a big sharp knife and some brake cleaner ;)   See new uses for brake cleaner from an earlier post today.

Good luck, be safe!

I would pack a ruck with rain wear, fire tools, a good pocket knife, a nalgene bottle or katydin filter bottle, a quality flashlight and extra batteries, compass, emergency blanket, modest firstaid kit. Enough to survive a night in the woods.  If you make sure to leave a detailed itinerary at the trailhead or family member and stick to it one night should be the worst case scenario.

Make sure it all goes in checked luggage as the knife and likely some of the other things will get confiscated if not get you detained.
