savage 111 package gun...don't shoot the donor :)
« on: July 12, 2011, 12:17:34 PM »
bought a savage 111 package gun in .270 with the intent of rebarrelling and changing out the trigger, just for fun.

got it for pocket change since it was on clearance.

decided "hell i will just lighten the trigger a bit and tighten the screws and take it to the range when i go next time.

got to the range and was pissed to see that i had forgotten my rest.

after getting it on paper at 25 and dialing in at 50 yards i moved out to 100 yards. the ridiculous heat and the shaky cardboard box i was forced to rest it on didn't keep it from punching 5 shots inside an inch. i wasn't babying it.

i wasn't thinking of keeping the barrel so i let it get HOT by shooting all 5 back to back and not really trying to be precise.

i am still kinda in shock that it shoots this great.

and annoyed that it's kinda ugly.

finally decided it fits me. functional but not so nice to look at. smile height=15

the point is, this literally out of the box, cheapo scope, package gun under $400 can shoot like my $1,000 mauser custom.

how great is THAT for rifle looneys like us, that even the cheapies perform?

on a side note, a groundhog had a fatal accident while i was at the range. it appears *ahem* that he or she ran into a 32 grain Sierra .204 bullet out of my contender and didn't have the uh....guts...to hang in there. wink height=15

Yep had a 110 Package gun in '06 do the same dam thing!  With factory ammo too-that cheap Rem Corlok loading! :o  Was so upset that I didn't have to bed , tweak and stone it ! Got super dissapointed when I start reloading for it and took those lousy 1" groups to 1/2" or  better at 100 yards!

The Savage "beauty" is in its performance. I don't know many shooters who hang their rifles to admire their "beauty.
The only down side to the Savage Package rifles is the optics package(bases, rings, scope). I have several Savage/Stevens rifles and am no longer amazed by their performance.
GOOD LUCK and GOOD SHOOTING!!!

My old .223 110 package gun would shoot .3 inch 3 shot groups. I rebarreled it to 220 swift and with virtually no load development it shoots .5 inch groups.
99% of all Lawyers give the other 1% a bad name. What I find hilarious about this is they are such an arrogant bunch, that they all think they are in the 1%.

I currently have six Savages in my safe and all are shooters, even my old non accutrigger 110 .270 will keep em under 1", and it has been sorely abused.

bought dies and brass and 90 grain sierra hollowpoints. was going to rebarrel to .243 but if this one is this accurate and can still shoot 90's, i am going to just leave it alone until the barrel gets shot out and then switch to .25-06.

My brother bought me a 111 package in 300 win mag a few years ago for Christmas. Spent a couple of years shooting one inch groups of factory ammo. Last fall I shot a cow elk at 400 yards with a 150 grain factory load! This year I started reloading. The last time out I put TEN rounds within 3/4 of an inch (all one big hole 3/4 of an inch across!) I love this gun! Thanks Bro!
