Advise on 41 rem mag

I want to get back into hand gunning.  I have had TC's in the past.   I would like to stay away from S&W and Taurus.  What are some of my options?  I have looked at DW and Ruger.  I do reload.  So what would you start with in this caliber.  Should it have a scope?  Should I buy a new or used gun.  Also what about the 414 DW.  This gun is intreging to me.  I will be using it mostly for whitetail and may some hogs.   Thanks for all your help.

My son has had two .41 Ruger Blackhawks. The 1st was stolen and a friend sold him the one he now has. Both were good shooters but the second one is a tack driver and was taken better care of. Both were bought second hand. He has Hogue grips on the one he now has and they're comfortable and mke the gun handle better for us. I like a dot sight on a handgun over a scope. He has a Ruger SRH with a 2x scope too. I like the .41 better and I'm a DA revolver man.

I currently have a ruger blackhawk, S&W's and a Taurus in 41mag. My Smith from the performance center is perhaps the most accurate wheelgun I have ever shot, have actually shot two different guns from the performance center and both have been unbelievable in the accuracy department.
Dont know the area you hunt so can't say whether a scope is better for you or not. You might want to look into Ruger's Hunter blackhawk, it comes with rings and you can try both scoped and not. Heck get two, carry one scoped and one without, I usually do.

I bought the Ruger- SBH 41 MAG Hunter it shoots a cast 255 WFNGC @ 1450 fps (24.0gr-H110) into 2" at 50 yds using a Burris 2x scope compared to the 480,475,500, etc very little recoil.

.41Magnum

Ridgerunner,

PM sent.

As to the question of the .414SM, I'd get the .41Magnum first and then see if the extra cost for brass is worth it. I've got a T/C barrel, a DW, and a custom Ruger Maximum in the cartridge to go with my .41 caliber collection. I can't tell that the SM has killed any better than a .41Magnum with my hunting loads. If you really want more oomph later on, save up for a .41GNR, a .41GNR#2. or a .410GNR. Welcome to ranks of the deviate .41Magnum shooters!

You will not regret the choice of buying a .41 Mag if you're a hanloader, as you mentioned.  The DW is the finest double action production revolver to be had, so it will make a great combo.  There is nothing wrong with the Rugers, but there is no legitimate comaprison between the two, as the pricing difference would suggest.  I'd pass on the .414, great a cartridge as it is....the DW large frame is a load in and of itself, let alone the supermag revolvler.  Couple that with questionable future brass availability, and I'd give it a long hard think before I bought the .414 Supermag.

In a strudy Dan Wesson or Ruger with a 6-8" barrel, you'll have no problem getting 1300fps with a 300gr cast bullet, so I don't really see a problem with deer.  I've never shot a hog, not that I wouldn't like to, so I can't say much on that front.

I currently own 14 .41 caliber handguns. 10 are .41RemMag the others are a SBH Reeder .41GNR, T/C Reeder .41GNR#2, a DW 7414 SuperMag and a T/C .411JDJ. To say that I like the caliber would be an understatement. I got into .41s’ buy mistake. When I purchased my first hunting handgun in 1989 I didn’t know you could only hunt with a .44RemMag so I in my ignorance purchased a S/W 657 .41RemMag. Guess I still haven’t learned you can’t hunt with them ‘cause they just keep coming home with me.
I have loads that go from primer only wax bullet loads to 300+g loads for the .411JDJ. To tell the truth I usually hunt with a .41RemMag because it has never failed to do the task I set out for it. It has cleanly killed animals as large as 2100+ lbs with one shot (250g WFNGC from CPBT) in fact only one animal has required more than one shot. It works great with 170g-210g bullets on deer sized game and there isn’t a hog walking this earth that will stand against a 250g hard cast lead bullet. BUY IT YOU’LL LIKE IT!
Love those .41s'

I have a question for you 41 owners.  Is it as versitile as the 357 and 44 regarding ammo.  I have both and can switch the ammo (38 or 44 special) depending on my shooting mood.  I never purchased the 41 because I don't reload and all the gun stores supply only one brand of ammo for the 41 (Remington, I think).  If I can be persuaded to buy one, I prefer a S&W or Ruger.  Thanks

Versatile? maybe not as much as the others because there is no commercial .41 special brass.  If you don't reload, then you won't be able to just load em down to lower levels.
As far as factory loads, you can buy Winchester, Remington, Federal, Cor-bon, from 170 grain to 250 grain.  If your local store don't have it, well, shoot, there is always the internet...
As for me, I hunt with a handloaded Hornady 210 grain XTP bullet.  I carry a 3" S&W 657 whether I'm in the forest, or the urban jungle, stoked with mild loads of Sierra 170 grain JHPs.  I see it kind of like a .40s&w +p+.  And then some.
The .41 Rem. mag has become my favorite caliber.  I see I am not in this boat alone.
Praise the Lord, and pass the ammunition!

Midwayusa.com now has hardcast 41 bullets in 250, 255, 265 plus others.  With and without gas checks.  My order is due to me Wednesday by UPS.

I don't remember being this excited about 44 bullets!

41 is  a great  caliber...a little different possibly like those who own it.

I currently have a 41 mag contender and used to have a 41 mag revolver and another contender barrel.  It is not as versatile as the 357 and 44 because their are not as many factory loadings (no cheap factory loadings that I know of), you do not have the option of the shorter cases or as wide a variety of bullets to use for reloading.  None of my 41 mags have ever been quite as accurate as my two 44 mags.  They are plenty accurate, just not them tight nice groups as I get with the 44's, and I reload and have spent a lot of time working up loads.

That said, I really like the 41 and will always have one.  I used the 41 the last two years if I deer hunted with a contender using a revolver cartridge.  So yes, I think the 41 is a great round, but it is not perfect in my opinion.

RR

I don't know if your aware of it, but Freedom Arms is currently offering their model 97 in a 5 shot revolver.  I'm seriously concidering getting one.  I have 2 other 97s and they both shot extremely well....A very strongly built gun.

But pricey!!!
