Thank you 4D reamers! Knife pic added!
« on: June 16, 2011, 11:21:32 AM »
This is a little off topic, but I thought you'd want to know about our sponsor.  I was just advised that I have won the Damascus folder knife that 4D was giving away!!!!  Yeah!!!  Yes, Amanda, they really do have winners for those things.  Now I have to wait for it to come.  Grrrrr!  ha ha.  I'll post some info if it's ok with Quick when it comes.  44 Man

Ok!  This is a real sweetheart!  It a heavy duty knife, one that will last several lifetimes if given a little care.  While the overall length is 7", the blade is just under 3" (which makes it legal in Michigan) and extremely sharp.  It has a tab for one handed opening, and what looks to be brass liners.  All in all a beautiful knife that I am pround to own.  44 Man

Do you mean you can own a rifle or a shotgun, and probably an ax to cut firewood with as well, but a jackknife with a blade over 3" long is prohibited in Michigan :o?

Essentially the same in Georgia.  It's considered a concealed weapon.  Most LEO have told me that if you use it as a tool, they won't care, if you use it as a weapon they add the charge of carrying concealed to all the other charges....

By the way...that is a beautiful knife.  I hope you wear it slap out skinning game!

Yup, MSP.  I can wear a 12" bowie on my belt and be a normal citizen.  But if I have a 3 1/4" folder in my pocket, I'm a dangerous felon.  Wouldn't it be nice if laws were required to actually follow common sense before they could be passed?  :)  44 Man

An otherwise law abiding person becomes a potentially heinous felon depending upon the 'dress accessories' chosen for the day........
I feel safer already.

Yes, if common sense would prevail many of our laws woud be more understandable, and there would also be less of us honest felons out there. It's good to see that ypur local LEO's are using common sense and not charging unless the over 3" blade is used as a weapon by a bad guy against a good guy. Much the same as is done in my home (liberal) state by LEO's on many foolish laws, and by LEO's in many other (but not all) juristictions from my expierence and knowledge....<><....:)

That's a beauty Lewis.  Looks like it's Damascus.  Please bring it to the shoot so I can get a good look at it.

That is a sweet knife.
I got this from the MSP site thou
http://www.michigan.gov/msp/0,1607,7-123-1586_27094-10953--,00.html

5.  Is it illegal to have a knife with a blade over 3 inches in my possession?

MCL 750.226   No. Michigan law specifies that a person, with intent to use the knife unlawfully against another, shall not go armed with a knife having a blade over 3 inches in length.

It sounds like a little 'forethought' regarding ones answers to an authority, intent upon asking important questions, is in order, should one choose to carry.  :o
I know that since I am now older and look less, well, shall we say, respectable, I dont have to answer sticky questions near as much as I once did......... ;D

Ah, then it is all about 'intent'.  A difficult thing to prove if you are just carrying.  But after a fight, if one of the 'combatants' used a knife OVER 3" in length, they will have something they can charge him with automatically.  Things are just so much neater that way.  Thanks for the info, it's just always been one of those thing that 'they say' that you cannot carry a folder over 3" in Michigan, and it is just assumed to be correct.  Nice to be armed with the truth.
And if I read that from the other direction, if I Do intend to do bodily harm to someone else, then it's ok as long as I do it with a 2 7/8" knife?   :)  44 Man.

Or a 6" screwdriver, or a 3# ball peen hammer?

Just use that knife 44 man and enjoy it.  Do as I do, and employ  the "don't ask don't tell policy".
