Dandy Lion Tea
« on: August 25, 2011, 01:52:55 PM »
In the spring of the year I took a bunch of young Scouts out to what we call Tenderfoot camp. It is basiclly for our first year boys to get them started in camping and Boy Scout stuff. I ended up teaching poisonous plants but threw in a few edable ones too. I told the boys that dandy lion leafs made a very good salid and picked a few for them to try.
Later that afternoon, I took the older scouts out for a small service project and a little fishing. When we got back to camp there wasn't a dandy lion left in the field. The little guys came up with the idea to make dandy lion tea. They basiclly boiled the leafs to a nice green tea and added sugar. IT WASN'T BAD!!!!

Ofcoarse, there was no sugar left for the leaders coffee on Sunday BUTTTTTTTT... the boys tried something different and had fun doing it.

When my Son was a Tiger Cub we went on a nature hike in the local mountains. We came upon some nasturtiums and the leader told the kids to be careful with them.... Then grabbed a handful and stuffed them in his mouth saying, "They can be very addictive."

Now in his 2nd year of Boy Scouts, my Son can't pass up a patch of them without at least eating one leaf. He always says, "It reminds me of my childhood."  ;D
