one-piece scope mount from H&R
« on: June 25, 2011, 09:09:30 PM »
it's pictured in the very back of the current catalog, looks like a beefy chunk of aluminum, about normal in length, and a bit shorter in height than most rings on mount/rails would be... what is the cost and are they pretty good?  I'm getting a new handi as soon as I get married (about a month now) and will NOT be using on/off systems since it's a .243 for varmints mainly.

side-note: I'm thinking a low-end nikon in 2-7 or 3-9 w/ 40mm objective or a bit smaller will be mounted onto the rifle, if that helps put the scope/barrel relation into perspective.

any other info on mounts for a handi are appreciated, the only one I've ever owned or shot is an iron-sighted 45-70 so it never was an issue (I never put anything on it but a stock riser).

I don't have a catalog, but by your description it sounds like the old "dead nutz", that I think got re-named into grim reaper, or game reaper, or some such. The base and bottom rings are one piece alloy. It is a very stout unit. It looks heavy, but is actually very light, due to it being aircraft grade alluminum. I have two, and like them very much.

Do it looka like dis?

Its a Dead Nutz setup... Well made but a little high for my tastes. but usable...

Doesn't look like a DNZ.

I agree with CW....

I have a DNZ mount on an Encore barrel and it is quite a bit high for my taste, but still usable.

I forgot to mention the handi I'm looking at is a monte carlo synthetic stock, length of pull feels a bit short on me so getting right up to the scope isn't an issue, even in heavy winter clothing.

for what it's worth the "straight" stock on my other handi made it about impossible to shoot a good group because my face was floating above the stock to stay in the sights.  I put a permanent cheek-riser on it and I'm good since- so if those rings ARE taller than they look in the picture I might need to find another option.

the durasight mounts you pointed out look good too, I might need to look into those for some other set-ups too.

I did not find a dura-sight model for H&R or Handi in the fitment chart for centerfire rifles.

You won't find an H&R thumbhole stock on Boyd's website either unless it's in their seconds, but they make them for H&R, just like the checkered camo syn stocks that Choate makes for H&R, you won't find them on the Choate website either.  ;)

so to get these we have to go through H&R / Remington / Marlin.  Oh well, at least there is a source for them.

Don't waste your time, I already scanned and posted it in reply #4 this morning, it looks like a Durasight one pc mount to me.

well, what's your preference quick?  if I get an aftermarket one piece I can take of the factory rail from the handi I'm gonna get and put that on my 45-70 (an iron sight rifle, but it wouldn't hurt to have a cheapo on/off scope to slap on it anyways), and keep the "beast" mount on my varmint rifle for a decent scope (nikon cheapo, nice for what I can afford anyways).

this rifle (.243 with one piece mount) will be a generalist game getter with a focus on "blowing-up" squirrels, so mounts that move are a no!  >:(

Neither, the one-pc mounts are too durned high for my preference, I like low mounted scopes, and none of the one-pc bases I've looked at are acceptable, I'm with CW too, he has the DNZ(Ded-nutz) I tried a Talley, it was too high and I sent it back, go ahead and call H&R and order one, you can be the guinea pig on this one!! ;D They do say it's medium, but if it will clear the hammer, it's likely too high for my taste. I've mounted a lot of scopes on H&Rs in medium Burris Signature Zee rings which are .270" from the top of the scope rail to the bottom of the scope tube, that's as high as I will go, prefer much lower with a bobbbed hammer.  ;)
